Complete Guide to Buying Bike Lights: Balancing Lumens, Beam Angle, and Battery Life

裝備介紹

Two Purposes of Bike Lights

Many people only pay attention to whether the front light is bright, overlooking that bike lights serve two completely different purposes:

  1. Letting you see the road (the primary function of the front light)
  2. Letting others see you (a function shared by both front and rear lights)

These two purposes place different demands on the light, and each should be considered separately when purchasing.

Front Light Buying Guide

The Meaning of Lumen Ratings

Lumens Suitable Scenarios
100-300 City streets with streetlights, letting cars see you
300-600 Suburban mixed conditions, able to see the road surface
600-1000 Rural roads, actual illumination
1000+ Night riding on mountain roads, requiring high brightness

Beam Modes

Steady mode: Best illumination, consumes the most power
Flashing mode: Best for letting cars see you (flashing is more noticeable), saves power

Recommendation: Use flashing for city riding, steady for night riding on mountain roads

Beam Pattern Design

A good front light beam pattern should:

  • Have a wide beam, not just a concentrated hotspot
  • Avoid glare (pointing upward and dazzling oncoming traffic)
  • Comply with road headlight regulations (if that matters to you)

Rear Light Buying Guide

The key point for rear lights is letting car drivers see you:

Lumens Effect
< 20 Barely visible, not recommended
30-80 Sufficient for general use
80+ Visible even during the day

Most important feature: Brake Light. Many popular rear lights in Taiwan have this function, where deceleration after acceleration automatically makes the light brighter to alert vehicles behind you.

Front lights:

  • Lezyne (high value for money)
  • Exposure (British high-end)
  • Cygolite (American mainstream)

Rear lights:

  • Garmin Varia (radar + rear light 2-in-1)
  • Lezyne Laser Tail (laser beam pattern)
  • Cateye (reliable Japanese brand)

Charging Methods

Almost all bike lights now charge via USB. It is recommended to choose a USB-C interface, making it more convenient to share a charger with your phone.

Safety Setup

The most basic night riding safety setup:

  • Front light: 300+ lumens steady mode
  • Rear light: 80+ lumens flashing mode
  • Reflective vest or reflective clothing
