Road Bike Second-Hand Market Guide: How to Smartly Buy a Good Used Bike

裝備介紹

Opportunities in the Used Bike Market

Taiwan’s used bicycle market is quite active, especially for high-end carbon fiber road bikes. Many riders upgrade their bikes every 2-3 years, keeping the market well-stocked with well-maintained used bikes.

Advantages of the Used Market

  • Better specs within budget: The same NT$50,000 can buy a higher tier than what’s available new
  • Lower barrier to carbon fiber: A carbon bike with an original price of NT$120,000+ can be had for NT$60,000 used
  • Accessories already included: The previous owner may have already installed various upgrades

Where to Find Used Bikes

Online platforms:

  • Ruten (露天拍賣): Taiwan’s largest used bike trading platform
  • Facebook cycling groups: Search for “公路車 二手” or “自行車 讓售”
  • Shopee (蝦皮購物): Seller ratings available, relatively safer
  • PTT Bicycling board: A long-standing forum with serious sellers

Offline:

  • Consignment at bike shops
  • Word of mouth among riders

Essential Checks Before Buying

Special Attention for Carbon Fiber Frames

The biggest concern with carbon fiber is invisible internal cracks:

  1. Visual inspection: Shine a strong light over the entire frame, looking for any abnormal surface patterns
  2. Tap test: Gently tap the frame with a coin; the sound should be uniform (solid feel). A “hollow” sound may indicate delamination
  3. Ask about crash history: The seller must disclose this truthfully

Drivetrain Inspection

Component How to Check
Chain Use a chain wear indicator; replace if >0.75%
Rear derailleur Check if the pull action feels smooth
Crankset Check for noise or play in the bottom bracket bearings
Cassette Inspect the degree of wear on the sprockets

Wheelset Inspection

  • Pinch test: Gently squeeze the spokes to confirm even tension
  • Spin the wheels: Check for lateral wobble (hop)
  • Rims: Check brake track wear (for rim brake models)

Reasonable Used Prices

Original Price 0-2 Years Used 3-5 Years Used
NT$80,000 NT$45,000-55,000 NT$30,000-40,000
NT$120,000 NT$70,000-85,000 NT$50,000-65,000
NT$200,000+ NT$120,000-150,000 NT$80,000-110,000

Negotiation Tips

  1. Do your homework: Research the market price for the same model first
  2. Point out flaws: Worn pedals, old tires, etc. can be used as bargaining chips
  3. Show sincerity: Paying in cash can help secure a better price
  4. Test ride: A reasonable seller should let you take a test ride

Things to Do After Purchase

  1. Full bike clean: To understand the bike’s condition
  2. Replace consumables: Chain, brake pads, inner tubes and tires
  3. Bike Fitting: Readjust the bike to fit your riding position
  4. Maintenance log: Start keeping your own maintenance records from now on

Common Pitfalls

  • Looks perfect in photos, actually damaged: Always inspect in person
  • “Never been crashed”: Verbal assurance needs backup (bring a knowledgeable friend)
  • A suspiciously low quick-sale price could mean stolen goods: Verify the source is legitimate
  • Wrong size: A wrong-sized used bike is harder to deal with than a new one
