The Arena of Speed: A Century of Track Cycling and Velodromes
Among all branches of cycling, Track Cycling is perhaps the purest. No wind, no rain, no slopes, no traffic lights—only an oval velodrome, a smooth wooden or concrete track, and the most direct dialogue between rider and speed. Track cycling is one of the oldest competitive forms of cycling and one of the earliest events in the Olympic Games.
The Birth of the Velodrome (1870s-1900s)
The Beginning of Bicycle Racing
The history of the velodrome is almost as old as the modern bicycle. The race held on May 31, 1868, at Parc de Saint-Cloud in Paris is considered the world’s first formal bicycle race. Shortly thereafter, dedicated bicycle tracks began to be built across Europe.
In the 1870s, with the popularity of the Penny-Farthing, indoor and outdoor oval tracks sprang up like mushrooms across Britain, France, and the United States. These early velodromes were typically surfaced with dirt or cinders and had gentler banking.
The Madness of Six-Day Races
In the late 1870s, an extreme endurance event called the “Six-Day Race” began to gain popularity in the United States and Europe. The original rules were simple and brutal—riders rode as much as possible over six days and six nights, circling the track continuously with only brief rests.

The most distinctive feature of modern velodromes is their banked curves. The design of the banking angle is a precise engineering science.
The Physics of Banking
When a rider travels at high speed through a curve, centripetal force is required to maintain circular motion. On a flat surface, this force can only be generated by the rider leaning their body, which is extremely dangerous at high speeds. A banked track allows riders to corner at speed without leaning their bodies—the steeper the banking angle, the higher the speed that can be sustained.

Track Cycling Bicycles
Track bicycles are the most minimalist of all bicycles—extreme simplification is their design philosophy.
Fixed Gear
The most fundamental feature of a track bike is the fixed-gear drivetrain—the rear cog is directly fixed to the hub and cannot freewheel. This means:
- The pedals must turn whenever the wheel turns
- Pedaling cannot be stopped
- There are no brakes
- Riders slow down by resisting the pedals
This design provides the most direct power transfer between rider and bicycle, but also demands exceptional skill and confidence.

Keirin
- Originated in Japan (1948)
- 6-8 riders follow a motorized pacer at a set speed
- The motorcycle pulls off with 2.5 laps remaining, and the riders begin their sprint

- Two riders start from opposite sides of the track simultaneously
- 4 kilometers for men, 3 kilometers for women
- The winner is the rider who catches the opponent or records the faster time
Team Pursuit
