Ages 4-6: 16-inch — The First “Real” Bicycle

Fact: Training wheels, water bottle cages, racks, fenders, front and rear lights — these seemingly useful add-ons can together add 2 to 3 kg to the bike’s weight. Keep only what’s truly needed, and add the rest later as needed.

Kids’ bikes typically only last 2 to 3 years before the child outgrows them and needs a new one. Because of this, the secondhand market is a great place to find a quality bike.
Key things to check when buying used:
- Frame: check for cracks, serious dents, or bends
- Wheels: spin the wheels to check for warping or wobble
- Brakes: confirm the brake pads still have enough thickness and the brake cables move smoothly
