Songbai Ridge, located in Mingjian Township, Nantou County, is one of Taiwan’s largest tea-producing areas and has become an increasingly popular climbing training ground for cyclists in recent years. Compared to the dramatic intensity of Wuling, Songbai Ridge is more like a gentle prose poem—tea gardens, mist, and cool breezes make every climb feel therapeutic.

Tea Garden Scenery

The slopes of Songbai Ridge are covered with Songbai Changqing Tea (the main production area of Taiwan’s Songbai Changqing Tea). The lush, layered tea gardens create a cultural landscape rarely seen on Taiwan’s climbing routes.

Shoutian Temple

The finish point of Songbai Ridge is the renowned Shoutian Temple (Temple of Xuantian Shangdi), one of the largest temples dedicated to Xuantian Shangdi in Taiwan. From the plaza in front of the temple, you can overlook the entire Nantou Plain, and on clear days even see the Changhua area.

Misty Trails

There are walking trails around the temple, often shrouded in morning mist, creating an ethereal, fairy-tale atmosphere.

Starting from Shetou, Changhua (Advanced Route)

Shetou → Mingjian → Songbai Ridge, approximately 25K in total with about 600m of climbing. Starting from the Changhua Plain, you gradually enter the mountainous area, with the gradient increasing from gentle to steep.

Starting from Mingjian (Standard Route)

Mingjian urban area → Songbai Ridge, approximately 15K with about 500m of climbing. This is the standard route chosen by most riders.

By car:

  • From Taipei, take National Highway 1 → Nantou Interchange → Provincial Highway 3 → Mingjian
  • From Taichung, take Provincial Highway 14 or Provincial Highway 3

By public transportation:

  • Take the TRA train to Yuanlin or Ershui Station, then ride your bike from there
