Key rule: The right side of the handlebar is wrapped from the outside inward (counterclockwise), and the left side is also wrapped from the outside inward (clockwise). This direction ensures that the friction from your grip won’t cause the tape to loosen.
Memory aid: “From outside to inside” — standing at the bar end looking toward the center of the handlebar, the tape wraps from the back-of-hand side (outside) toward the palm side (inside).
Step 3: Even overlap

- When the tape reaches below the brake lever, route it around the lower edge of the clamp band
- When wrapping above the clamp band, pass the tape over the area covered by the short strip
- Continue wrapping upward
The goal is to have the brake lever clamp band completely covered by the tape and short strip, with no exposed metal visible from the outside.
Step 5: The upper section
After passing the brake lever, continue wrapping with 1/3 overlap up to the top of the handlebar. Stop at your desired endpoint (usually 3-5 cm before the stem).
Step 6: Finishing
- Cut the end of the tape at an angle (approximately 45 degrees) with scissors to create a clean, flat edge
- Securely wrap the included finishing tape or electrical tape around 2-3 times to secure
- Confirm the finishing end sits flush with no lifted edges
Step 7: Installing the end plugs
Press the bar end plugs into the bar openings, pushing the excess tape from Step 1 in along with them. The plugs should snap in snugly—tap them in with your hand or gently with a mallet.
Step 8: Repeat on the left side
Wrap the left side of the handlebar using the same steps, noting that the wrapping direction is mirrored.
