The Yujing Mango Road: A Cycling Exploration of Taiwan’s Agricultural Culture

Yujing District in Tainan City is Taiwan’s most important mango-producing region. Every midsummer, mango trees across the hillsides are laden with golden fruit, and the entire town is filled with a sweet fruity aroma. Cycling through the mango orchards not only lets you experience the abundance of Taiwan’s agriculture but is also an excellent way to understand the rural culture of southern Taiwan.

Yujing Mango Varieties and Characteristics

The mango varieties grown in Yujing are rich and diverse, each with its own unique flavor:

  • Irwin Mango: The most popular variety, with fine, sweet flesh and bright red skin, in season from approximately June to August
  • Jinhuang Mango: Larger in size, high in sweetness, with little fiber, in season from approximately July to September
  • Keitt Mango: A late-maturing variety that only begins its peak season after September, extending the mango-viewing season
  • Local Mango (Tu Mango): A traditional Taiwanese variety with small fruit but a rich aroma, often used to make dried mango

Along the ride, you can buy fresh mangoes directly from roadside farms at prices much lower than in the city, and the quality is fresher as well.

Route Description

Departing from Yujing Old Street

Yujing Old Street is the starting point of this ride, with numerous shops selling mango-related foods: mango shaved ice, dried mango, mango jam, and mango wine—everything you can imagine. Before setting off, it is recommended to enjoy a bowl of Yujing’s signature mango shaved ice on the old street, replenishing your energy before the ride while also experiencing the local food culture.

Mango Orchard Section

After leaving the urban area, large mango orchards begin to appear on both sides of the road. During midsummer (June–August), the mango trees in the orchards are laden with fruit, a sea of golden yellow with fragrance wafting through the air. Farmers often set up temporary stalls by the roadside, and freshly cut mangoes make for the most natural cycling refreshment. Some farms offer fruit-picking experiences, allowing visitors to hand-pick ripe mangoes—an unforgettable agricultural experience.

Around Tsengwen Reservoir

Riding approximately 20 km from Yujing brings you to Tsengwen Reservoir, Taiwan’s largest reservoir, with immense water storage capacity and magnificent lake-and-mountain scenery. A cycling path is available around the reservoir, allowing you to ride along the lakeshore and enjoy the azure reservoir views. The reservoir management office has a visitor service center providing information about the reservoir and rest facilities.

Tainan Agricultural Culture

The Yujing area preserves much of Tainan’s traditional agricultural culture:

  • Mango Festival: The Yujing Mango Festival is held annually from June to August, featuring various mango-themed activities
  • Rural Life Experiences: Some farm households offer rural life experiences, including fruit picking, making dried mango, and other activities
  • Traditional Market: The Yujing traditional market sells a variety of local agricultural products and is a great place to learn about southern Taiwan’s food culture

Best Cycling Seasons

  • Mango Season (June–September): The most distinctive season, with bountiful orchards and the freshest mangoes to enjoy, but be mindful of summer heat
  • Spring (March–May): Mango blossoms bloom, covering the orchards in white flowers—a unique sight, with cooler weather as well
  • Winter (December–February): Not the production season, but the climate is cool and comfortable, ideal for longer rides

Summer Heat Cycling Precautions

Summer temperatures in Yujing can exceed 35°C, so special attention is needed when cycling:

  1. It is recommended to ride between 6–9 a.m. or 4–6 p.m. to avoid the midday heat
  2. Hydrate generously, drinking at least 500–750 milliliters per hour
  3. Apply sunscreen, and wear arm sleeves and a sun hat
  4. If you feel dizzy or unwell, stop riding immediately and find shade to rest
