In the build phase, I added bricks—running right after a long ride—so she got used to the feeling of “my legs can still run after 90 km on the bike.” In the race phase, we tapered, keeping a small amount of race-pace stimulus.
  4. Rehearse on local terrain: Before the race, I had her find a route with similar terrain for her long rides, and practice eating the race-day nutrition on every long session, turning both her gut and her pacing into instinct.

She finished successfully—the bike leg didn’t fall apart as she’d feared, and she even had enough left on the run to pass quite a few people. She won by knowing how to pour her limited time into her limiter while protecting her most vulnerable area. That’s the value of integration—not pushing every discipline to its limit, but moving the whole forward with the lowest possible injury risk.

A Simple Weekly Checklist

Every Sunday night, I have my athletes ask themselves five questions:

  1. Did I touch all three disciplines this week? (Don’t let any discipline go zeroed for two consecutive weeks.)
  2. Was my limiter given priority this week?
  3. Did I really slow down on my low-intensity days?
  4. Did I hit my high-intensity sessions properly, or was every day a gray zone?
  5. Did I sleep enough this week? Are there any soreness warning signs?

Answer all five honestly, and your integration direction probably won’t go off track.

Conclusion: Pour the Oil in the Right Place

Back to A-Kai. I changed his schedule from “eight hours crammed with all three disciplines” to “eight hours with swimming up to three times, running cut to two sessions but quality-focused, and cycling used to build the aerobic base.” Six months later, his standard-distance swim split improved from 40 minutes to 32, his overall finish time jumped significantly, and—what I’m most gratified about—he didn’t get injured once in those six months.

Limited time was never the problem—pouring your limited oil in the wrong place is. The three disciplines interfere with each other, but as long as you know how to set priorities, execute polarization, protect your most vulnerable running, and make good use of the easiest-to-schedule swimming, you can absolutely train all three more consistently than others with fewer hours.

You don’t need more time. You need better allocation. That is the entire meaning of periodization integration.

I’ll leave you with one sentence for everyone who never has enough time yet wants to train everything well: Don’t fight time—work with it. Acknowledge that you only have this many hours a week, then spend them where they matter most—take care of your limiter, execute polarization, protect your running, make good use of swimming, build your base on the bike, and treat recovery as the fourth discipline with real seriousness. Do these, and you’ll find that the key to progress was never “train more,” but “train smarter.” That’s the one thing I’ve most wanted to pass on after fifteen years of coaching athletes.
