Mistake 3: Wearing Too Much Gear
In the chaos after exiting the water, some athletes spend a lot of time putting on socks, changing clothes, and applying sunscreen.
Countermeasure: Get used to riding and running without socks during training. Triathlon shoes are designed to be worn barefoot. Only in races longer than the 70.3 distance might the comfort benefit of wearing socks be worth the time spent.
Simulation Drills in Training
Schedule at least 2-3 complete swim-to-bike transition simulations each month:
- Run practice after open-water swimming: Practice adapting to the dizziness after exiting the water
- Timed wetsuit removal practice: Record your time each session and strive for improvement
- Full T1 simulation: Practice the entire process from exiting the water to starting the bike leg
- Flying mount shoe-specific practice: Repeatedly practice in a safe environment
