Q8: What if I get kicked, swallow water, and panic at the start?
This is very common in group swimming. The most important thing in the moment is to get away from the crowd—swim a few meters to the side, roll onto your back to float, run through the three steps “Stop, Exhale, Orient,” and return to the course once you’ve recovered. Pre-race simulated start practice exists precisely so you become familiar with this kind of physical contact and won’t panic the first time it happens on race day.

Back to A-Ning’s story. After that tearful moment at Sizihwan, we didn’t give up—we went back to the starting point and began again with a basin of water at home. Cold water face washing, pool swimming without touching the wall, swimming along the shore at Sun Moon Lake—step by step, we completed the full gradual exposure. At her first triathlon, she successfully finished the swim leg in the sea—as she came ashore, she gave me a thumbs up. I still remember that image to this day.
I want to tell every one of you struggling with open-water fear: Your fear is real, it has a clear physiological root, and precisely because it’s physiological, it can be trained and recalibrated. Cold water shock can be habituated, the dive reflex can be tamed, and breathing rhythm can be rebuilt. What you need isn’t stronger willpower to “suppress” the fear, but smarter methods to “tame” it.
Starting today, fill a basin with cold water and take your first step. The ocean isn’t as terrifying as you imagine, and the distance from the pool to the sea is closer than you think.
