  • Late afternoon/evening: Best for high-intensity sessions (intervals, tempo runs, FTP tests, power work), because your neuromuscular system is most efficient then, allowing you to execute quality sessions properly.

This isn’t an ironclad rule—your daily routine and work schedule are the biggest variables—but it’s a very useful default for sequencing double training days.

Fasted Morning Training: Should You or Shouldn’t You?

This is probably the single most common question I get from athletes. The answer isn’t “yes” or “no”; it’s “it depends on what the purpose of that session is.”

The Science of Fasted Morning Training: It Trains Your “Fat Engine”

The triathlon-specific Brick session (running immediately after riding) is technically one continuous session, not the “spaced double” I discussed above. Advanced Age-Group Athletes (Goal: Set PBs, Reach the Front of Your Age Group)

  • Double days: Two to three per week, strictly following “one hard, one easy,” with at least 6 hours between sessions.
  • Morning training: Use fasting for low-intensity sessions to train fat metabolism; move high-intensity sessions to the evening with proper fueling.
  • Sleep: Monitor recovery with morning resting heart rate and subjective fatigue; when you hit a yellow light, decisively downgrade that day’s hard session to an easy one.
  • Reminder: Your bottleneck is usually “recovery management,” not “not training enough.” Learning to hit the brakes is what lets you train longer and deeper.

Long-Distance Challengers (113/226, Goal: Break Through the Wall)

  • Double days: Paired with weekend long sessions and Bricks; weekday double days maintain frequency and metabolic adaptation.
  • Morning training: Long fasted aerobic sessions are the core weapon for honing the fat engine, but don’t go beyond 90 minutes without fuel in a single session; add carbs mid-session if you do.
  • Sleep: With the highest training volume, your sleep debt risk is also the highest. During heavy weeks, schedule sleep extension, even a 20-minute daytime nap.
  • Reminder: Success in a 226 often comes down to “whether you still have fuel in the later stages.” The fat metabolism you grind in training and the sleep capital you accumulate are the foundation for that final 42 kilometers.

A Common Reminder for All Levels: Schedule “Rest” First, Then Training
