Many riders, enjoying the scenery and easy gradients in the Taroko Gorge section, get excited and push their power up. When the final ten kilometers of steep climbing arrive, they fall apart on the spot. The correct approach for the KOM is to hold back like a monk in the early part, stay with the group, conserve energy, and save your real matches for that final stretch—above 3,000 meters, steep, and oxygen-deprived.

Tatajia, Fengguizui, Beiyi, Datun: A Tiered Training Ground

Not everyone lives at the foot of Wuling, but Taiwan has ready-made training climbs everywhere:

  • Fengguizui (Taipei): Moderate distance and gradient—an excellent venue for practicing “sustained pacing on a medium climb plus hand position changes.” A weekend staple for many northern cyclists.
