I often tell my athletes that fitness is the hardware, and mental strategy is the operating system. The same computer runs completely differently with a different OS. A-Kai eventually learned to zone out on gentle gradients and only lock onto cadence on steep climbs. Three months later, he not only finished the Fengguizui climb but was smiling as he planned the next route with me. His legs hadn’t suddenly gotten stronger—he had finally learned “where to put his mind.”

Next time you head out, give yourself a little experiment: on easy days, deliberately cover your bike computer, zone out, and enjoy the scenery; on quality days, deliberately lock onto your breathing and pace. Feel the difference, then start practicing using the right strategy at the right time. You’ll discover that the plateau holding you back was never your legs—it was your attention being in the wrong place.
