Starting 86 Meters Below Sea Level: Dante's View in Death Valley, the World's Most Unforgiving Road to Ride

In the parking lot at Badwater Basin, one thing will make you stop short: look east at that ochre-red cliff face, and about halfway up, there’s a small white sign nailed to it that reads “SEA LEVEL.”

You’re standing 86 meters lower than that sign.

That’s the lowest point in North America. Beneath your feet is a cracked white salt crust stretching to the horizon. The air shimmers with heat. And the road you’re about to ride ends at the top of that cliff—Dante’s View, at roughly 1,669 meters above sea level, where the entire Badwater Basin below becomes a thin silver line.

This is a road that starts below sea level and climbs to 1,700 meters. It’s also one of the most unforgiving roads on Earth.


⚠️ First, the most important thing: the heat here can kill you

Before getting into the route details, this has to be said clearly, because this section matters far more than any pacing advice.

Death Valley is the hottest place on Earth with recorded temperatures.

  • On July 10, 1913, Furnace Creek recorded 56.7°C (134°F), the officially recognized highest air temperature ever recorded on the planet’s surface—though some modern climatologists have questioned the observation conditions of this record.
  • More recent, more credible records are 54.4°C (130°F) on August 16, 2020, and July 9, 2021 (not yet officially certified by the World Meteorological Organization as of the time this information was compiled).
  • The average July high is around 52°C.
  • On July 15, 1972, a ground temperature of 93.9°C was recorded—the only time ground temperature has been recorded above 200°F.
  • Summer nighttime lows can still remain between 28°C and 37°C. In other words, sunset doesn’t give you relief.
  • Annual rainfall is only about 60 millimeters. The air is extremely dry.

Why “dry heat” is especially dangerous for cyclists

Taiwanese riders are no strangers to heat—but Taiwan’s heat is humid heat, while Death Valley is extreme dry heat, and the risk mechanisms are completely different:

This is Death Valley’s most insidious trait: its dryness makes your sweat evaporate the instant it leaves your pores. You’ll feel like you’re “fine,” but your body fluids are draining at an alarming rate. The National Park Service’s official recommendation is at least one gallon (about 3.8 liters) of water per day—and that’s the standard for general visitors, not for someone climbing on a bike at noon.

Core official safety guidelines

The U.S. National Park Service’s core guidance for Death Valley visitors includes:

  1. When it’s hot, do not hike (or do any strenuous activity) in low-elevation areas of the valley floor. Higher elevations are relatively cooler.
  2. Hydrate heavily—at least one gallon per day.
  3. Cell phone service in the park is limited or nonexistent.
  4. Use low gears on steep descents (originally advice for cars, equally applicable to bicycle brakes).

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke: the warning signs you must recognize

The moment you feel dizzy, nauseous, or have a severe headache, stop all strenuous activity immediately, get out of the heat, and take small sips of water every few minutes. Don’t tell yourself “I’ll just push a little further.”

Bottom line: when you can ride, and when you absolutely must not

The suitable riding season is roughly November through March. Winter daytime temperatures on the valley floor are usually comfortable, and this is the primary cycling season in Death Valley.

Do not ride on the valley floor from May through September. This isn’t conservative advice; it’s a safety baseline. Even in the early morning, valley floor temperatures can already exceed 35°C, and if something goes wrong on the road, there’s no shade, no water, no signal, and very little traffic.

Everything that follows in this article assumes you’re riding under suitable winter conditions.

A note on data discipline: Different sources report significantly different lengths and elevation gains because the starting point can be the Badwater Basin parking lot, Furnace Creek, or the intersection of Dante’s View Road and Highway 190. The table above uses ranges from common databases; defer to the road signs on site and your own bike computer.

2. Segment-by-Segment Breakdown

Segment 1: The Valley Floor—Riding Below Sea Level

Starting from Badwater Basin and heading north on Badwater Road, this section is nearly flat with only a very gentle rise. On your left is the white salt flat; on your right, the ochre-red cliffs of the Black Mountains.

The most unique experience here is the breakdown of visual scale. The air is extremely clear (lacking moisture), and visibility can extend for tens of kilometers, making distant mountains look much closer than they actually are. You’ll think that turn is “five minutes away,” then ride for twenty minutes without reaching it.

What this section means for pacing: It’s a free warm-up and the only time you can easily resupply. Drink enough water and get your sugar in, because for the next two hours you won’t have the mental bandwidth to deal with those things.

Segment 2: Turning onto Dante’s View Road—The Gentle Alluvial Fan Climb

After turning from Highway 190 onto Dante’s View Road, the road begins a gradual climb along the alluvial fan. The gradient is roughly 3–6%, the pavement is generally good, and traffic is so sparse it’s almost nonexistent.

Vegetation is practically absent—only scattered creosote bushes. This is the most “monotonous” yet most oppressive stretch of the entire route: you’ll become acutely aware that nothing out here can help you.

Segment 3: The Real Climb, Averaging About 6.5%

Once you enter the Black Mountains proper, the road starts climbing in earnest. This section is about 21 km with roughly 1,364 meters of elevation gain at an average gradient of about 6.5%—the main body of the entire route.

The road begins to wind, and the temperature drop with altitude becomes noticeable—for every 1,000 meters of elevation gain, the temperature drops roughly 6°C, a lifesaving law of physics in Death Valley. You ride from the dry heat of the valley floor into progressively cooler air higher up.

Pacing focus: This is the section that determines success or failure. Use an intensity you can sustain for over 90 minutes (80–88% of FTP), and maintain your timed hydration rhythm. The dryness here will have you losing fluid constantly while barely feeling thirsty.

Segment 4: The Final Steep Pitch and That View

Near the overlook, the road gets steeper and narrower, with a noticeable climb—this is also why the park restricts large vehicles. The steepest 100-meter section is documented at around 13%.

Then you crest the final rise, and the view explodes open in a single second.

1,700 meters directly below is the Badwater Basin where you stood two or three hours earlier. From this height, the salt flat becomes a thin silver line, and the entire shape of the valley is laid out before you. On a clear day, you can simultaneously see the lowest point in the contiguous 48 states (Badwater Basin, −86 meters) and the highest (Mount Whitney).

This is one of the very few places on Earth where a single ride lets you see both the lowest and highest points of a continent.

Pay special attention to the 2.0 and 2.5 W/kg rows. Add in the valley floor section before, and this means a rider of beginner ability will be exposed to the outdoors for over three hours. In Death Valley, “exposure time” matters a hundred times more than “performance.”

A Physics Lesson Unique to This Road: Temperature Changes Air Density More Than Altitude

The air density formula is ρ = p ÷ (R × T). Most people only remember “the higher the altitude, the thinner the air,” but forget that T (absolute temperature) is in the denominator—the higher the temperature, the thinner the air.

Death Valley pushes both effects to the extreme. Actual calculations:

The most counterintuitive entry is this one: at 50°C on the Death Valley floor, even though you’re 86 meters below sea level, the air density is only 1.1035 kg/m³—equivalent to the air density at about 1,075 meters in the standard atmosphere.

Translated into real-world feel: maintaining 35 km/h on flat ground,

In summer, you’d save about 20 watts of aerodynamic drag. But those 20 watts come at the cost of your life—that trade is never worth it.

4. Hydration and Heat Management: The Real Challenge of This Road

In Death Valley, the pacing chart is secondary. What truly determines whether you come back safely is hydration and heat management.

General Principles (individual variation is large; adjust based on your own experience)

  • Hydrate on a timer, not by thirst. Set a rhythm of taking a sip every 10 to 15 minutes, using your bike computer or a timer as a reminder. The thirst sensation arrives far too late in dry heat.
  • Electrolytes are non-negotiable. Drinking only plain water while sweating heavily carries a risk of hyponatremia (water intoxication), with symptoms including headache, nausea, and confusion—very similar to heat exhaustion, which is the most dangerous point of confusion. Hydration must be paired with sodium intake.
  • Sweat rates vary enormously between individuals, and during exercise in high heat, you can lose anywhere from one to several liters per hour. The most reliable method is to measure it yourself: weigh yourself before and after a ride (accounting for what you drank and eliminated) to calculate your own hourly loss rate. You can do this in Taiwan during the summer.
  • Carry for the worst case: if you expect to ride for three hours, bring enough water for four. There are no resupply points on this road.

Shade and Sun Protection

  • Light-colored, breathable, long-sleeved jerseys often perform better than short sleeves in extreme dry heat—they reduce direct sun exposure while allowing sweat to evaporate on the fabric rather than instantly leaving the skin.
  • High-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and head coverage are not optional.
  • Watch out for radiant heat from the asphalt: ground temperature can be far higher than air temperature, meaning you’re being hit from both above and below.

A Support Plan You Must Have

It is strongly recommended to do this road with a support vehicle. This isn’t a luxury; it’s the reasonable standard for this environment:

  • Someone knows your route and schedule
  • Extra water, extra food, extra clothing are available
  • The ability to pick you and your bike up if something goes wrong
  • Cell phone service in the park is limited or nonexistent—your phone cannot be your safety net

Key difference: In terms of physical demand, Dante’s View is roughly the magnitude of a Wuling ride, which isn’t particularly difficult for many Taiwanese riders. But the environmental risk is on an entirely different level. No matter how high Taiwan’s mountains are, you’ll rarely ride for two hours on a road without encountering another person, a shop, or a water source. Death Valley will.

Mindset Adjustment

The biggest adjustment Taiwanese riders need to make is this: in Taiwan, “just push a little further” is usually safe; in Death Valley, that thought can kill you.

Taiwan’s mountains have convenience stores, temples, indigenous villages, passing scooters, and cell signal. These safety nets have trained us into a “ride first, figure it out later” habit. Death Valley has none of these, so all decisions must be made in advance—decide your turnaround point and turnaround time before you leave, and execute it without exception.

Practical Preparation (principle-based recommendations; defer to official announcements)

  • Season: November through March. Avoid May through September.
  • Time of day: Even in winter, start in the morning and finish by afternoon.
  • Park entry: The national park has entrance fees and related regulations; check the latest official information.
  • Accommodation and car rental: Options exist both inside and outside the park, but confirm prices, operating hours, and availability directly with providers—this information changes quickly.
  • Gearing: For a long 6.5% climb, a compact crank with an 11-32T cassette is sufficient for most; beginners should consider 11-34T.
  • Tires: The road surface is generally good, but desert roads often have fine sand and gravel; 25c or wider, puncture-resistant tires are a sensible choice.

6. Safety Reminders (Full Version)

  • Extreme heat is a fatal risk. Do not ride on the valley floor from May through September. Check the daily forecast in any season.
  • Dehydration and hyponatremia: Hydrate on a timer and take electrolytes. If you experience dizziness, nausea, severe headache, or confusion, stop immediately and seek help.
  • No signal: Make sure someone knows your itinerary; a support vehicle or satellite communication device is strongly recommended.
  • No resupply points: Carry enough water and food for the entire route, plus one extra portion.
  • Descent risk: A continuous 1,700-meter descent will severely heat your brakes. Brake hard intermittently, release, then brake hard again—don’t drag the brakes continuously.
  • Temperature differences: The temperature difference between the summit and the valley floor can be large; add layers for the descent. In winter, temperatures near the top can approach freezing.
  • Wind: Crosswinds on the alluvial fan and open valley can be strong; lower your center of gravity and hold the drops on descents.
  • Traffic: Traffic is sparse but fast, and drivers may be looking at the scenery rather than the road. Wear high-visibility clothing and use flashing lights.
  • Wildlife and environment: Don’t leave the road onto salt flats or sandy areas; the desert environment is more fragile and dangerous than it looks.

8. Other Routes Worth Riding in the Park

Badwater Road Valley Floor Out-and-Back

This road along the valley floor is nearly flat, but it offers a completely different experience: riding below sea level, flanked by North America’s most dramatic geological scenery. For those who don’t want to take on the 1,700-meter climb, or who are short on time, this is the safest and most enjoyable option.

One thing to note: crosswinds on the valley floor can be extremely strong. The open salt flat offers no shelter, and a gust of side wind can push you out of your lane. That’s the only real risk on this “flat” road.

Artist’s Drive

A one-way loop road that winds through hills colored pink, green, purple, and yellow by mineral oxidation. This road has pronounced rollers and sharp curves, with short, steep gradients—a ride with a completely different rhythm—less of a climb and more of a series of short intervals.

Because it’s one-way, traffic direction is simple, but there are many blind corners; control your speed.

Zabriskie Point

On Highway 190 east of Furnace Creek, a short climb brings you to this famous overlook with views over a wrinkled expanse of yellow badlands. This is an excellent “short version” experience—if your itinerary only allows an hour of riding, this is the highest value option. It’s also on the way to Dante’s View Road, making it a good mid-route checkpoint for longer rides.

9. On the Name, the History, and the Legends

The name “Death Valley” is itself a warning. The valley earned its name in the mid-nineteenth century from a party crossing it during the gold rush era—a history that is itself a series of stories about thirst, getting lost, and poor judgment.

Dante’s View is named after the Italian poet Dante—the poet who wrote the Divine Comedy, describing the descending circles of Hell. In the mid-1920s, a representative of a borax company chose this spot while searching for the best viewpoint in Death Valley, and gave it a name laden with literary metaphor: you stand on high, looking down into a hell called “Badwater.”

This is also sacred ground for ultramarathoners—every July, runners start from Badwater Basin and head west into the high mountains across Death Valley. It’s an activity conducted at the very edge of human heat tolerance, and it reminds us once again: this place is not for people in the summer.

For cyclists, the meaning of these stories isn’t just romance. They all say the same thing: this environment doesn’t give you a second chance. All your respect should be translated into a preparation checklist before you leave.

10. Heat Acclimatization: If You Really Ride in Warmer Conditions

Although this article strongly recommends riding only in winter, even in November or March, Death Valley’s daytime temperatures can be hotter than a Taiwanese autumn. The following is a general explanation of heat acclimatization (individual variation is large, and it cannot replace medical evaluation):

It is generally understood that heat acclimatization requires several consecutive days to about two weeks of regular exposure. After acclimatization, the body’s changes include earlier onset of sweating, increased sweat volume, lower sodium concentration in sweat, increased plasma volume, and lower heart rate at the same intensity.

This is actually good news for Taiwanese riders: regular riding in Taiwan’s summer is itself a form of heat acclimatization training. If you can complete rides of over two hours in Taiwan in July or August with stable condition, your cardiovascular regulation already has a foundation.

But there are two important caveats:

  1. Humid heat acclimatization is not the same as dry heat acclimatization. Taiwan’s heat primarily tests your cooling efficiency (because sweat doesn’t evaporate easily), while Death Valley’s heat primarily tests your fluid maintenance ability (because sweat evaporates too quickly). The former trains your cardiovascular system; the latter tests your hydration discipline.
  2. Acclimatization is lost. If you leave for Death Valley in Taiwan’s winter, most of your heat acclimatization has already faded. Be even more conservative in that case.

The most important point: heat acclimatization can make you perform better in heat, but it doesn’t make extreme heat safe. 50°C is 50°C, and no amount of training can make riding in those conditions a reasonable decision.

11. Five Deadliest Mistakes in Death Valley

Mistake 1: Using Taiwanese hydration instincts. “If my clothes aren’t wet, I’m not sweating” is completely wrong here. Solution: hydrate on a timer, and measure your own sweat rate in advance.

Mistake 2: Bringing only plain water. Sweating heavily and replacing fluids without sodium carries a risk of hyponatremia, and its symptoms are so similar to heat exhaustion that it leads to incorrect responses. Solution: every bottle should contain electrolytes.

Mistake 3: Underestimating exposure time. Many people only look at the elevation gain (1,700 meters, similar to Wuling) and forget to look at time. At 2.5 W/kg, the full route takes over two and a half hours, and adding the descent and rest stops, outdoor exposure exceeds four hours. Solution: plan by time, not distance.

Mistake 4: Treating your phone as a safety net. Signal in the park is limited or nonexistent. Solution: leave a clear itinerary with others, and consider a satellite communication device or support vehicle.

Mistake 5: No hard turnaround point. “I’ve already come this far” is the most dangerous thought. Solution: decide before you leave “if I haven’t reached point X by time Y, I turn around,” and execute it without exception. The mountain will always be there, and Dante’s View will still be there next year.

12. Action Checklist

Before the trip:

  1. Confirm the season: plan this route only from November through March.
  2. Check the forecast for the day and the next three days, and set a hard threshold for “cancel if it exceeds X degrees.”
  3. Establish a support plan: a support vehicle, or at minimum a clear route briefing and turnaround time.
  4. Measure your sweat rate in Taiwan first (weigh yourself before and after a ride) to calculate your hourly hydration needs.
  5. Prepare electrolytes—don’t bring only plain water.

On the day:

  1. Start in the morning, and write your turnaround time on a sticker on your handlebar or set it as a reminder on your bike computer.
  2. Start timed hydration on the valley floor, taking a sip every 10–15 minutes; don’t wait for thirst.
  3. Complete a full resupply before turning onto Dante’s View Road (water, sugar, electrolytes).
  4. On the climb, use an intensity you can sustain for 90 minutes; don’t sacrifice your hydration rhythm for performance.
  5. After reaching the overlook, put on a jacket before descending, and treat the descent as an independent task to be executed with care.

Finally: when you stand at Dante’s View looking down, remember to look back and find that silver-white salt flat. You were standing on it this morning. There are very few places in the world that can offer that kind of contrast.
