Carbon Plate Super Shoes Biomechanics: Energy Return, Achilles Strain & Shoe Selection
Since the advent of Nike’s Breaking2 project and the introduction of the Vaporfly 4%, carbon-plated thick-soled super shoes have fundamentally rewritten distance running record books.
However, super shoes are not a risk-free silver bullet. While delivering a 3% to 4% improvement in running economy via high energy return PEBA foams and longitudinal stiffness levers, they dramatically alter joint kinetics—increasing Achilles tendon strain while sparing knee joint and quadriceps fatigue.
