What Is Pedaling Efficiency?

Pedaling efficiency refers to the ability to effectively output power at every position throughout the full 360° pedal stroke. Riders with low efficiency typically produce very little force near the “top dead center” (12 o’clock) and “bottom dead center” (6 o’clock), effectively wasting a large amount of energy.

Pedaling Technique Training Methods

Method 1: Single-Leg Pedaling

The most fundamental and effective pedaling technique drill:

How to perform:

  1. Clip one foot into the pedal, place the other foot on the rear rack or leave it unclipped (on a trainer)
  2. Perform single-leg pedaling at a low-to-moderate cadence (60-70 RPM) for 20-30 seconds
  3. Focus on smoothness near the 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock positions
  4. If pedaling feels jerky, your technique needs improvement

Workout plan:

  • 6 x 30 seconds per leg (30 seconds rest)
  • 2-3 times per week

Method 2: High-Cadence Light-Gear Training

How to perform:

  • Use the easiest gear ratio
  • Increase cadence to 100-120 RPM
  • Keep your upper body stable (no rocking)
  • Maintain for 10-20 minutes

High cadence forces the ankle and calf muscles to actively engage, improving pedaling smoothness.

Method 3: Low-Cadence Strength Training

Conversely, low-cadence training strengthens muscular power output:

  • Cadence of 50-60 RPM
  • Perform on a moderate gradient climb
  • 3-5 minutes per rep, repeat 3-5 sets
