Long-Climb Pacing Strategy: How to Maintain Steady Output on Mountain Sections
The most common mistake in mountain riding is starting too fast at the base. Many riders instinctively accelerate when they see a climb, trying to power through “while they still have energy,” but this strategy often leads to a mid-climb collapse. Pacing management on long climbs is the key to success.
Understanding the Three Pacing Phases
A long climb can typically be divided into three phases: the start phase (0-25%), the middle phase (25-75%), and the sprint phase (75-100%).
The start phase should begin at an intensity slightly below your target power, giving your body time to adapt. Heart rate will rise slowly, and you should stay steady during this phase without being fooled by the initial feeling of ease.
The middle phase is the longest and most critical part. Here, you should maintain a consistent power output, using a heart rate monitor or power meter to ensure you stay within a reasonable range. Many riders feel the urge for a “second surge” during this phase, and you must resist that temptation.
The sprint phase covers the final 20-25% of the climb. If pacing has been managed well, you should still have energy for a final acceleration, creating a psychological sense of victory.
Practical Pacing Tools
A heart rate monitor or power meter is essential for long climbs. Set your target zone based on your functional threshold power (FTP). For riders focused on climbing, you should work between 75-90% of threshold power.
Without electronic devices, you can use the “talk test”: if you can’t complete a full sentence, you’re going too fast; if you can sing, you’re going too slow. Maintaining a pace that allows for quiet conversation is ideal.
Pacing Case Studies on Classic Taiwan Climbs
Wushe to Cingjing (Hehuan Mountain North Peak): This 11 km route with an average gradient of 7% takes about 30-40 minutes to complete. The correct pacing strategy should be to keep intensity low for the first 5 km, maintain 85% of FTP for the middle 5 km, and accelerate in the final 1 km depending on how you feel.
The mountain trail in Jianshi Township, Hsinchu: For steeper, shorter climbs (average gradient 8-10%), interval-style pacing is more suitable—accelerating on short sections where your legs allow, and easing off to recover on the steeper sections.
Adjusting Pacing for Weather and Environment
When riding in Taiwan’s summer heat, you should pace more conservatively than planned. Rising temperatures accelerate heart rate increase, and going too hard early can lead to overheating and dehydration.
Winter climbing is the opposite: in cooler air, you can produce more power at the same heart rate, but you need a longer warm-up period.
Pacing Practice Recommendations
Regularly perform pacing training on a fixed climb. Record completion time, heart rate curve, and power data. After 4-6 weeks of systematic training, you’ll find that your completion time on the same climb noticeably decreases, or you can sustain higher power over the same duration.
Pacing management on long climbs isn’t about speed itself—it’s about efficiency. A smart rider knows when to conserve strength and when to attack.
