Climbing Gear Strategy: Gear Shifting Techniques and Gear Ratio Selection for Different Grades
Many climbing riders make the mistake of shifting frequently and aggressively. The correct gear strategy is not to shift constantly, but to intelligently select the appropriate gear ratio and make changes at the optimal moment.
Understanding the Relationship Between Gear Ratios and Grade
The gear ratio determines the relationship between pedal cadence and wheel speed. A larger gear ratio (large chainring + large cassette) produces higher speed but requires more power; a smaller gear ratio (small chainring + small cassette) reduces speed but decreases the power required.
For climbing, the key is to find a comfortable cadence range (typically 80-90 RPM), then maintain that cadence through gear shifting.
Common Climbing Gear Ratio Configurations
Mid-range mountain bikes (3x8 or 3x9 rear derailleur):
- Minimum gear ratio approximately 22:28 (about 0.79), suitable for 5-8% grades
- Extreme gear ratio approximately 32:34 (about 0.94), suitable for steep grades above 8%
Advanced mountain bikes or road bikes (2x11 or 2x12 rear derailleur):
- Minimum gear ratio approximately 34:32 (about 1.06), suitable for 4-6% grades
- Extreme gear ratio approximately 34:50 (about 0.68), suitable for steep grades above 10%
For climbing in Taiwan, many riders recommend upgrading to a small chainring of 34T or even 32T, with a rear cassette maximum sprocket of at least 42T.
Gear Shifting Strategies for Different Grades
Gentle grades (4-5%):
- Maintain a medium gear ratio, close to the most comfortable cadence
- No need for excessive shifting; focus on steady output
- Can use a larger gear ratio to increase speed
Moderate grades (6-8%):
- This is the range where shifting occurs most frequently
- For every 1% increase in grade, you should downshift one gear in advance
- Don’t wait until the pedals become too heavy before shifting
Steep grades (9% and above):
- Should use the smallest gear ratio, keeping cadence above 80 RPM
- Between 9-12%, adjust the rear derailleur to maintain cadence
- For ultra-steep grades above 12%, you should downshift to the smallest gear ratio before entering
The Importance of Shifting in Advance
The most common shifting mistake is “forced shifting”—waiting until the pedals become too heavy to turn before shifting. By then, you’ve often already lost momentum, and you may even drop the chain.
The correct approach is to anticipate grade changes and shift before you feel difficulty. When entering a steeper section, you should start downshifting 30-50 meters in advance.
Using the Front Derailleur
The front derailleur (chainring shift) should be used cautiously when climbing:
- Shift on flat or downhill sections: The front derailleur is prone to dropping the chain when shifting uphill
- Reduce shifting frequency: Once you set the chainring (small ring) when entering a climb, don’t change it again
- Prioritize the rear derailleur: 95% of climbing shifts should use the rear derailleur
Gear Ratio Recommendations for Classic Taiwan Routes
Wuling Route (Wushe to Hehuan Mountain Main Peak):
- First 6 km (6% grade): medium gear ratio
- Middle 8 km (7% grade): continuously downshift
- Final 3 km (8-10% grade): use the smallest gear ratio
Recommended setup: 34/50 gear ratio, capable of handling the entire climb
Cingjing Farm (climbing from Puli):
- Average grade 7%, recommended to maintain a 32/34 or 34/36 gear ratio
- Short steep sections require quick shifting adjustments
Hehuan Mountain East Peak:
- Most sections have an 8-9% grade
- Recommended minimum gear ratio no lower than 32/42
Gear Shifting Technique Drills
- Anticipation drill: Familiarize yourself with regular routes and remember in advance where you need to shift
- Smooth transitions: Reduce pedaling force when shifting to avoid dropping the chain
- Cadence management: Maintain a target cadence of 80-90 RPM, achieved through shifting
- Emergency preparedness: When encountering a sudden steep grade, immediately switch to the smallest gear ratio
Upgrade Considerations
If you frequently feel the pedals are too heavy (unable to reach your target cadence) when riding climbs, you should consider:
- Upgrading to a larger rear cassette (e.g., from 34 to 37 or 42)
- Switching to a 3x configuration (adding more shifting options)
- Installing a mountain bike derailleur on a road bike
The correct gear strategy makes climbing easier and more controllable. Not all suffering is necessary—sometimes it’s just a matter of choosing the wrong gear ratio.
