Descending Safety and Technique: The Correct Descent Strategy After Reaching the Summit
Many climbing riders make a fatal mistake: they prepare perfectly for the climb, but rush the descent. Descending is not simply the reverse of climbing; it carries entirely different risks and skill requirements. In fact, descents cause far more injuries than climbs.
The Physics of Descending
Descending is 8-10 times faster than climbing, but braking distance increases by 16-100 times. A small mistake on a descent is magnified into a disaster.
The Role of Gravity:
- On flat ground, you control acceleration and deceleration
- On descents, gravity constantly accelerates you
- On steep slopes, speeds can easily reach 60-80 km/h
- At this speed, reaction time becomes a matter of life and death
Braking Systems and Technique
Braking Force Distribution
Modern bicycles have two braking systems, front and rear. Many beginners don’t know the correct way to use them.
- Front brake (70% of braking force): More efficient, but overuse leads to flipping over the handlebars
- Rear brake (30% of braking force): Safe but less efficient
The correct ratio should be: use both brakes simultaneously, coordinating front and rear, avoiding reliance on the front brake alone.
On long descents, you should use “intermittent braking” rather than continuous braking. Continuous braking causes the wheel rims to overheat, eventually leading to brake failure (brake fade).
Intermittent Braking Technique:
- Use the brakes to reduce speed to a safe range (30-40 km/h)
- Release the brakes, allowing the bike to accelerate back to 20-25 km/h over a short distance
- Repeat this cycle for the entire descent
- This method keeps the braking system cool and prevents fade
Body Position and Weight Management
Descending Body Position
Different gradients require different positions:
Gentle slopes (3-5%)
- Can maintain a normal riding position
- Use a higher gear ratio (shift down a few gears), utilizing gravity
- Focus on enjoyment and speed
Moderate slopes (6-8%)
- Move your body rearward, shifting weight back
- Lower your center of gravity for increased stability
- Use the drops (if available) to reduce air resistance and improve visibility
Steep slopes (9% and above)
- Move your body fully rearward, hips may come off the saddle
- Arms bent, center of gravity extremely low
- Feet should be in the neutral position (not pedaling), ready to react to surprises
Purpose of Shifting Weight Rearward:
- Keeps the rear wheel grounded, preventing the front wheel from lifting
- Improves braking efficiency
- Enhances stability
Cornering Control
Descending corners are where riders fail the most. Many try to maintain their climbing speed through corners, leading to loss of control.
Correct Descending Cornering Sequence:

Brake early (30-50 meters before the corner)
- Do not attempt to brake inside the corner
- You should already be at your target speed when entering the corner
- Adjusting speed inside the corner leads to loss of control

Choose your line
- Look toward the corner exit (not the inside of the corner)
- Choose a line that enters wide, cuts the apex, and exits wide
- This “apex” method minimizes the required lean angle

Lean and steering
- Below 40 km/h, you can steer without leaning your body
- At higher speeds, lean your body and bike together
- Lean angle should increase gradually, not suddenly
- The front wheel should point where you want to go, not “point at the corner angle”

- Maintain a steady speed through the corner (no accelerating, no braking)
- Accelerate after the corner exit
Common Cornering Mistakes:
- Entering the corner too fast, then panicking and braking mid-corner
- Adjusting speed inside the corner, leading to loss of control
- Seeking outside support (handlebars, body, etc.) instead of relying on lean
- Using the front brake inside the corner, causing the front wheel to slide
Special Descending Situations
Consecutive Hairpin Turns
Common sharp turns on Taiwan’s high mountains, such as the multiple 180-degree bends on Hehuan Mountain.
- Brake significantly before entering (10-15 km/h)
- Use the rear brake to maintain stability (the front brake is useless here)
- Nearly stand up, leaning your body completely
- Take a straight line through (don’t try to optimize the line)
- Only accelerate after fully exiting
Wet and Slippery Surfaces
Common after rain in Taiwan’s mountainous areas.
- Cut all speeds in half
- Reduce braking force (wet tires have low grip)
- Increase braking distance by 30-50%
- Avoid braking inside corners
- Consider walking (pushing the bike) on particularly dangerous sections
Gravel and Loose Debris
- Avoid riding at high speed on sections with visible gravel
- If you must pass through, slow to below 15 km/h
- Keep a straight line, avoid steering (tires have no grip on gravel)
- Move your body fully rearward, ready to slide
Braking System Maintenance
Long descents place extreme stress on the braking system. Ensure your bike is ready:
Pre-ride Inspection:
- Brake pad thickness: should be at least 3mm (especially important to check before descending)
- Brake fluid: hydraulic brakes should be clear and transparent
- Brake response: both brakes should have similar response time and power
Special Considerations for Taiwan’s High Mountains:
- Many descents exceed 20km of total descent
- Brake fade is a real risk
- It is recommended to perform a full brake inspection before long descents
- Consider upgrading to a more efficient braking system (such as hydraulic disc brakes)
Mental Preparation
Many riders fear descents more than climbs psychologically. This is normal, but it can be managed.
Gradual Exposure:
- Don’t challenge the steepest descent on your first ride
- Start with gentle slopes to get accustomed
- Progress to steeper sections as confidence grows
Understanding Fear:
- Fear usually comes from uncertainty
- Learning proper technique, understanding risks, and practicing skills will reduce fear
- Many beginners’ fear exceeds the actual danger
Rhythmic Breathing:
- Practice deep breathing exercises before descending
- Use rhythmic breathing to stay calm on difficult sections
- Mental calmness directly improves riding control
Specific Recommendations for Taiwan’s High Mountain Descents
Wuling Descent
- Total descent: 1,350 meters, average gradient 5%
- But there are multiple sections exceeding 10%
- Brake fade risk: moderate
- Strategy: intermittent braking, full braking at major corner points
- Estimated descent time: 50-70 minutes (don’t rush)
Hehuan Mountain East Peak Descent
- Total descent: 1,800 meters, multiple extremely steep sections
- Brake fade risk: high
- Strategy: frequent intermittent braking, walking on many sections
- Estimated descent time: 80-120 minutes
- Strongly recommended: stop multiple times to check brake temperature
Cingjing Farm Descent
- Total descent: 550 meters, relatively gentle
- Lower risk
- Can ride more aggressively
- Estimated descent time: 20-30 minutes
Advanced Techniques
Feather Braking
- Continuous light braking, rather than intermittent
- Keeps wheel rim temperature below the critical point
- Suitable for very long descents
- Requires a high level of feel and practice
Counter-leaning
- On particularly dangerous corners, don’t lean your body; instead, point it outward
- Advanced technique requiring stability and confidence
- Not recommended for beginners
