Close Your Eyes and Start Training
At the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, the US gymnastics team pioneered the use of mental imagery training and saw a dramatic improvement in results. Since then, more and more athletes – from professional footballers to elite mountain bikers – have come to treat “mental rehearsal” as a core part of their training.
Mental imagery, also known as visualization or mental rehearsal, refers to the process of clearly and vividly imagining yourself performing a movement or completing a scenario inside your mind. It may sound like pseudoscience, but it is backed by solid neuroscience.
Why Does Mental Imagery Work?
Neuroscience research has found that when we vividly imagine a movement, the neural circuits activated in the brain overlap significantly with the circuits activated when we actually perform that movement. In other words, the brain cannot fully distinguish between a “real experience” and “high-quality imagery.”
Functional MRI (fMRI) studies show that:
- When athletes imagine pedaling, corresponding neural activity does appear in the motor cortex
- Imagery training can strengthen the neuromuscular connections of the relevant muscles
- Long-term imagery practice can speed up the automation of technical movements
A classic study of high school basketball players found that the group who only performed mental imagery training (without actually shooting hoops) improved their free-throw percentage by an amount comparable to the group who practiced shooting every day in real life.
Types of Mental Imagery
Internal Imagery vs. External Imagery
Internal imagery: performed from a first-person perspective – you “see” the road ahead, “feel” the resistance of the pedals, “hear” the wind. This is especially effective for mastering technical movements.
External imagery: performed from a third-person perspective – you “watch” yourself riding from the outside, as if viewing a video recording. This is more helpful for overall tactical planning and route analysis.
Research suggests combining both approaches: use an internal perspective for technical details, and switch to an external perspective for overall planning.
Dynamic Imagery vs. Static Imagery
Dynamic imagery: imagining the complete riding process, including the sense of time passing. Studies have found that the time it actually takes to perform a movement is very close to the time imagined for that same movement during mental imagery training.
Static imagery: focusing on a specific posture or technical detail, such as a perfect cadence rhythm or an ideal climbing position.
A Practical Guide to Mental Imagery Training for Cyclists
Basic Process
Step 1: Relax body and mind (3-5 minutes)
Find a quiet, comfortable place, close your eyes, and take a few deep breaths to let your body and mind settle down.
Step 2: Set the scene (2 minutes)
Clearly define what you want to imagine. Is it tomorrow’s training route? An upcoming race? A particularly difficult climb?
Step 3: Engage multiple senses (the core practice)
Don’t just “see” – also “feel”:
- Sight: the texture of the road surface, the surrounding environment, the color of the handlebars
- Touch: the push of the pedals, the grip of the handlebars
- Sound: the chain turning, tires on the ground, the rhythm of your breathing
- Body sensations: the burn in your muscles, your heart rate rising
Step 4: Add emotion (important!)
Imagine yourself in a state of focus, confidence, and energy. Adding emotion significantly boosts the effectiveness of mental imagery training.
Step 5: Finish and return to the present
Take a deep breath, slowly open your eyes, and note down the feelings and insights from your imagery session.

- Technical improvement: imagine a perfect cadence, climbing posture, or descending cornering technique
- Route rehearsal: mentally ride the full course before a race
- Overcoming fear: imagine safely and successfully navigating a dangerous section to reduce fear
- Post-injury rehabilitation: maintain neuromuscular connections during injury to speed up your return
- Physical training: imagine a perfect effort before a high-intensity interval session
- Confidence building: review and amplify past successful experiences
Building a Mental Imagery Habit
Start with 10 minutes a day, at times such as:
- Right after waking up: mentally prepare for the day’s training
- Before training: activate your nervous system and enter a focused state
- Before bed: review the day’s training to consolidate learning
- On rest days: maintain a sense of training without adding physical load
The quality of mental imagery matters far more than the quantity. One clear, vivid, emotionally engaged 10-minute session beats 30 minutes of absent-minded imagining.
