The biggest challenge of night riding is the sharp reduction in field of view. Without ambient light sources, your field of view depends entirely on your bike lights. This creates several specific problems:

Dark Adaptation

When moving from a bright environment into darkness, the human eye needs 20-30 minutes to fully adapt (for complete regeneration of rhodopsin in the rod cells). Practical advice:

  • Before entering the night section, avoid looking directly at strong lights (such as bright lights at aid stations)
  • When using red light sources, dark adaptation is least affected
  • Avoid the habit of looking at your phone screen (high blue light severely disrupts dark adaptation)

Observation Strategies

Visual strategies for night riding need adjustment:

  • Scan rather than stare: Keep your gaze moving continuously, avoid staring at a fixed point for long periods which causes visual fatigue
  • Utilize peripheral vision: At night, peripheral vision is actually more sensitive than central vision (due to the distribution characteristics of rod cells)
  • Raise your gaze: Look further ahead to give yourself more reaction time

Safety Preparation

Being Seen is the Priority

The most important safety principle for night riding is making yourself visible to others:

  • Reflective vest or reflective strip equipment
  • High-reflectivity clothing (choose bright colors + reflective elements)
  • Multiple front and rear light configurations
  • Reflective stickers on the sides of the helmet

Route Selection

For night riding, prioritize:

  • Familiar routes (do not ride unfamiliar roads on your first night ride)

Riding with Companions

It is strongly recommended to ride with companions at night, or at least inform family and friends of your route and estimated return time. If an accident occurs while riding alone at night, rescue response could be delayed.

Mental and Physical Management

Combating the Physiological Low Point

For the physiological low point between 2-5 AM, the following strategies can be used:

  • Caffeine intake: Consume caffeine 1 hour before the expected lowest point (3-6mg/kg body weight), the effect is significant
  • Brief nap: If circumstances allow, a 15-20 minute “Power Nap” can significantly improve subsequent performance
  • Rhythmic music: Use earphones (but retain the ability to perceive ambient sounds) to play music with a strong rhythm
  • Warm up with nutrition: Drink warm beverages to maintain core body temperature and ward off sleepiness

Temperature Difference Management

Nighttime temperatures can be 10-15°C lower than daytime, so prepare warm gear:

  • Lightweight windbreaker (windproof, lightweight, foldable for storage)
  • Gloves (hands are prone to losing heat at night)
  • Head cover or ear warmers
  • Leg warmers (for knee warmth)
