The Basics of the Menstrual Cycle and Hormones
A typical 28-day menstrual cycle is divided into two main phases:

Ovulation (Days 12-16)
- Estrogen reaches its peak
- Strength and power may be at their highest
- But ligament laxity increases, slightly higher risk of knee injury

Luteal Phase (Days 15-28): The Intensity Adjustment Period

- Watch hydration: Mild bloating may occur in the luteal phase, but there is no need to deliberately restrict fluids
- Adjust heart rate zones: Heart rate is higher at the same power output in the luteal phase, so pace by power rather than heart rate

These are general trends, and individual variation is large. Some women see no impact on performance during the luteal phase, while others are significantly affected. The best strategy is to track your own data and identify your personal cycle patterns.
