Taiwan’s Top 100 Peaks Challenge Route Guide: The Complete Wuling and Hehuan Mountain Road Cycling Guide

Wuling, at an elevation of 3,275 meters, is the highest point in Taiwan’s road system and the most sacred pilgrimage site in the hearts of countless cycling enthusiasts. Every year, tens of thousands of riders converge from all directions, driven by the single goal of stepping onto that cloud-shrouded summit and witnessing the magnificent scenery of Taiwan’s high mountains with their own eyes. If you too harbor the dream of conquering Wuling, this complete guide will be your best companion.

Route Overview

There are two most common starting points for the Wuling challenge: Puli (Nantou County) and Wushe.

Starting from Puli (Provincial Highway 14A)

  • Total Distance: Approximately 52 kilometers
  • Elevation Gain: Approximately 2,700 meters
  • Difficulty: Extremely difficult
  • Estimated Time: 6 to 10 hours (depending on individual fitness)

Starting from downtown Puli, head west along Provincial Highway 14, then turn onto Provincial Highway 14A after passing Wushe. This is the most mainstream route to the Wuling summit. After Wushe (approximately 1,148 meters), the road gradually steepens, with gradients holding between 5% and 8%, and some sections even exceeding 10%.

Main supply points include:

  1. Wushe (1,148m): Convenience stores and supply stations are plentiful; it is recommended to do your final full resupply here
  2. Lushan Hot Spring Junction (approximately 1,300m): Food stalls available
  3. Cingjing Farm (1,750m): Restaurants and convenience stores; hot food available
  4. Cuifeng (2,480m): Small shops; temperatures drop noticeably
  5. Yuanfeng (2,860m): Has an interpretive station; the last place to take a brief rest
  6. Hehuan Mountain Lodge (3,150m): Supply station, approximately 4 kilometers from the Wuling summit

Starting from Dayuling (Provincial Highway 8)

Another popular route starts from Dayuling on the Hualien side, taking Provincial Highway 8 (Central Cross-Island Highway). This route has relatively gentler gradients and features more pristine and spectacular scenery along the way, but supply points are fewer, so thorough preparation is required in advance.

High-Altitude Riding Precautions

Altitude Sickness Prevention

Wuling’s elevation exceeds 3,000 meters, and the risk of altitude sickness cannot be ignored. It is recommended to stay overnight in Wushe or Cingjing Farm the day before to acclimatize to the altitude, avoiding a direct ascent from low elevation on the same day. Common altitude sickness symptoms include headache, nausea, and dizziness. If any of these symptoms occur, you should descend immediately.

Unpredictable Weather

The weather in the Hehuan Mountain area changes in an instant; even at noon in summer, temperatures can drop rapidly and fog can roll in. Be sure to carry:

  • Windproof and waterproof jacket
  • Long-sleeve cycling jersey
  • Gloves (insulated gloves needed in winter)
  • Spare food supplies

Descent Safety

The descent from Wuling spans more than 50 kilometers in total, and prolonged braking can easily cause wheel rims to overheat. It is recommended to:

  • Use a bike equipped with disc brakes
  • Descend in stages to allow the brakes to cool down
  • Check brake pad wear before starting the descent

Best Riding Seasons

  • Spring (March to May): Pleasant weather, but afternoon thunderstorms are possible
  • Summer (June to August): The most popular season, but typhoons require attention
  • Autumn (September to November): Best visibility and stable weather
  • Winter (December to February): Snow and ice are possible, making it highly dangerous; not recommended for non-professional riders

Equipment Recommendations

Tackling Wuling requires a well-rounded equipment setup:

  • Gear Ratio: It is recommended to have a minimum small chainring of 34T and a rear cassette of 32T or larger
  • Water Bottles: At least two bottles, plus a hydration pack as backup
  • Food: Energy bars, salt tablets, electrolyte supplements
  • Tools: Spare inner tubes, pump, basic repair tools
  • Communication: Carry communication devices that work in Taiwan’s mountain areas

Wuling Certification

Upon reaching Wuling, taking a photo in front of the mileage marker at the Wuling parking lot is a must-do ritual for many riders. Events such as the “KOM Taiwan Taiwan KOM Challenge” also use Wuling as the finish line, attracting the world’s top climbers to compete here every year.

Completing the Wuling challenge is not just a test of physical limits; it is also a profound dialogue with Taiwan’s high mountains. In the moment the clouds part, the sense of accomplishment is beyond words in any language. May every challenger reach the summit of Taiwan’s highest road safely and successfully.
