Nantou Cingjing Farm Route: A Paradise for Climbing Training
Among Taiwan’s many climbing training routes, Cingjing Farm is a destination particularly beloved by cyclists. Its elevation is moderate (approximately 1,748 meters), the gradient is continuous and steady, the scenery along the way is beautiful, and the finish offers ample supplies and rest facilities—this combination makes Cingjing an excellent choice that balances both training effectiveness and riding enjoyment.
Route Basic Information
Main Route: Puli → Wushe → Cingjing Farm
- Start: Puli urban area (elevation approx. 430 meters)
- Finish: Cingjing Farm Qingjing Grassland (elevation approx. 1,748 meters)
- One-way distance: Approx. 36 km
- Total elevation gain: Approx. 1,320 meters
- Average gradient: Approx. 3.7%
- Difficulty: Moderate to moderately hard
The entire route follows Provincial Highway 14, with good road surface quality, sufficient width, and moderate traffic volume. The front section from Puli (Puli to Wushe, approx. 20 km) has a gentler gradient, averaging 3 to 4%; after passing Wushe, the gradient rises slightly and holds between 4 and 6% all the way to Cingjing.
Segment Breakdown
Segment 1: Puli urban area → Wushe (approx. 20 km)
This section is the so-called “warm-up segment,” with a smooth road surface and a gentle gradient, suitable for gradually building up your pace. It passes through the rolling hills along Provincial Highway 14, with simple, rustic scenery and occasional farmland and orchards along the way.
Milestones:
- 5 km: Shoucheng Mountain fork, where you can see the mountain peak on the right
- 12 km: Lushan Hot Spring fork, continue straight to keep climbing
- 20 km: Wushe urban area (elevation 1,148 meters), an important resupply point
Wushe has convenience stores and several small eateries. It is recommended to replenish food and water here, as supply options are fewer on the 15 km stretch from Wushe to Cingjing.
Segment 2: Wushe → Cingjing Farm (approx. 16 km)
After passing Wushe, the road conditions become more challenging. The gradient holds steadily between 5% and 7%, making this the core climbing training segment.
Milestones:
- 3 km (from Wushe): “Wanda Reservoir Viewing Platform” fork, where you can briefly stop to enjoy the view
- 8 km: Provincial Highway 14A road sign, gradient rises slightly
- 10 km: Qingjing Grassland entrance archway (elevation approx. 1,700 meters), arrival is near
- 16 km: Cingjing Farm Qingjing Grassland (finish, 1,748 meters)
Training Value Analysis
The value of the Cingjing route for climbing training lies in the following key characteristics:
Steady Gradient Profile
Unlike routes like Wuling, which feature extreme steepness and dramatic gradient fluctuations, the Cingjing route has a uniform gradient, making it suitable for “Threshold Training.” You can maintain a pace close to threshold intensity throughout the entire ride, fully stimulating aerobic system adaptation.
Moderate Elevation
An elevation of 1,748 meters is already sufficient to produce a mild altitude effect (oxygen concentration drops by approximately 10%), which helps stimulate red blood cell production and improve oxygen-carrying capacity, yet it remains below the risk threshold for altitude sickness, making it highly safe for the average cyclist.
Repeatable Training Plans
The distance and elevation gain of Cingjing make it ideal for “segmented interval training”:
- Full-effort climb: Time-trial all-out from Puli to Cingjing to challenge your personal best (Strava KOM)
- Pace training: Climb steadily at your target climbing pace (typically 80 to 90% of FTP as measured by a power meter)
- Recovery ride: Complete the entire route at an easy, low intensity to promote recovery
Cingjing’s Seasonal Characteristics
Spring (March to May)
In spring, Cingjing Farm bursts into bloom, especially lavender and various alpine flowers, offering a first-class visual experience during the ride. Temperatures are moderate, making it the most comfortable riding season.
Summer (June to August)
In summer, Cingjing’s temperature is about 10 to 12 degrees Celsius lower than the lowlands, so even midsummer climbing is not unbearably hot. However, afternoon thunderstorms are frequent, so it is recommended to depart between 7 and 8 AM and arrive at Cingjing before noon.
Autumn (September to November)
With crisp autumn air and clear visibility, this is the best season for climbing all year round. The panoramic views of the Central Mountain Range are especially magnificent.
Winter (December to February)
Cingjing Farm may experience snowfall in winter, and icy road surfaces pose a high danger. Once temperatures drop below 5 degrees Celsius, attempting this route is not recommended.
Enjoyment After Arriving at Cingjing
After climbing this route, reward yourself well:
- Qingjing Grassland: A vast alpine pasture where you can get up close with sheep, a rare European-style landscape in Taiwan
- Cingjing Farm B&Bs: A variety of European-style bed and breakfasts line the area, offering excellent mountain-view accommodation experiences
- Alpine hot pot: Restaurants around Cingjing serve abundant high-mountain cuisine, and a hot pot after the climb is the perfect reward
- Qilai Nenghuan: Cyclists with plenty of energy left can continue on Provincial Highway 14A to challenge the higher-altitude Qilai mountain area
Practical Tips
- It is recommended to bring a power meter or heart rate monitor to precisely control training intensity
- On climbs, do not force big gears; make good use of the easiest gear ratio to maintain a cadence of 70 to 80 rpm
- On descents, relax your upper body and distribute braking pressure to avoid arm fatigue from gripping the handlebars too tightly for extended periods
- Mobile phone signal is good around Cingjing Farm, so you can call for help in an emergency
The Cingjing Farm route is the easiest to arrange and the highest value-for-money climbing training venue outside of northern Taiwan. If you are preparing to challenge Wuling or other high-mountain routes, Cingjing will be your best training ground.
