Complete Guide to Tire Repair: Fixing Tubular, Clincher, and Tubeless Tires
No matter what type of road bike you ride, knowing how to repair a flat is essential skill for every cyclist. Each of the three mainstream tire systems has its own characteristics, and the repair method differs for each. This guide covers all three in full, so you won’t be caught off guard the next time you flat on the road.
1. Clincher Tire Repair
The clincher is the most common tire system, with the tire and inner tube as separate components, making repairs relatively straightforward.
Step 1: Locate the Leak
- Remove the wheel from the bike and inflate the tube slightly with a pump (it doesn’t need to be full — just enough pressure to work with).
- Hold the wheel near your ear and rotate it slowly, listening for the sound of escaping air; alternatively, submerge the wheel in a basin of water and watch for bubbles.
- Mark the leak location on the tube (chalk or a fingernail mark works fine).
Step 2: Remove the Tire
- Fully deflate the tire.
- Using two tire levers, start on the side opposite the valve, pry up the bead, and work your way around the rim to free one side of the tire from the rim.
- Pull the tube out starting at the valve, being careful not to tug on the valve stem itself.
Step 3: Find the Puncturing Object
Before replacing or patching the tube, you must locate and remove whatever punctured the tire (glass shard, wire, thorn, etc.) — otherwise a fresh tube will simply get punctured again right away.
Run your fingers slowly around the inside of the tire, feeling for anything protruding; you can also wipe a cloth around the outside of the tread, which will snag on any embedded debris.
Step 4A: Install a New Tube (Fastest Option)
- Add a small amount of air to the new tube (just enough to give it shape and prevent it from twisting during installation).
- Insert the valve into the valve hole in the rim first, then tuck the rest of the tube inside the tire.
- Use your thumbs to push one bead of the tire back into the rim channel, working from both sides of the valve toward the opposite side — the last section may be tight, so push firmly with your thumbs (avoid using levers here if possible, to prevent pinching the tube).
- Check that the tube isn’t pinched outside the bead, then inflate to the recommended pressure.
Step 4B: Patch the Old Tube (Useful When You’re Out of Spares or Practicing)
- Once you’ve found the leak, sand the surrounding area (roughly 1.5 times the size of the patch) until the surface is roughened.
- Apply a thin layer of vulcanizing cement and let it sit for 2–3 minutes until it becomes tacky (not fully dry).
- Peel the backing off the patch, press it firmly over the leak, and work from the center outward to make sure there are no trapped air bubbles at the edges.
- Let it sit for 2–3 minutes to cure, inflate slightly to confirm there’s no leak, then reinstall the tube.
Glueless patches: Follow the instructions on the package — they’re faster to apply, though somewhat less reliable long-term than glued patches, so they’re best treated as an emergency-only option.
2. Tubular Tire Repair
A tubular tire has the tube sewn inside the casing as a single unit, glued onto the rim. Roadside repair options are more limited, but it helps to know the basic process.
Roadside Emergency Fix (Swapping in a Spare)
- Peel off the old tubular, starting opposite the valve and working outward to both sides — if rim tape/glue is present, this can take some force.
- Add a small amount of air to the spare tubular, fit it onto the rim, center it, then inflate fully — the air pressure will naturally seat the tire into the rim channel.
- Note: a tubular installed roadside this way isn’t properly glued and is only held in place by air pressure — avoid taking fast corners and get back to base to glue it properly as soon as possible.
Proper Tubular Repair (Once Back at Base)
- Find the leak: Inflate the tubular and submerge it in water to spot the bubbles.
- Open the stitching: Use a stitch-ripping tool to cut open the casing seam near the puncture, over a length of about 5–10cm, being careful not to cut into the tube itself.
- Patch the tube: Pull the tube out and patch it using the standard glued-patch method described above.
- Reinsert the tube and re-stitch the casing: Tuck the tube back inside the casing and hand-stitch the seam closed with tubular thread, using a stitch spacing of about 3–4mm, making sure the stitching is even and pulled tight.
- Glue the tubular back onto the rim: Apply a thin layer of tubular-specific glue (such as Continental Rema) to the rim channel, let it sit until tacky, then fit the tubular on and press it evenly into place. Inflate to 8–10 bar so the tire fully seats into the channel.
3. Tubeless Tire Repair
Tubeless systems rely on sealant to automatically seal small punctures, but larger damage requires manual repair.
Small Punctures (Sealant Handles It Automatically)
For punctures around 3mm in diameter or smaller, sealant will typically seal the hole automatically within 30–60 seconds:
- Keep the wheel spinning so the sealant flows to the puncture point.
- If it’s leaking slowly, try rotating the wheel so the puncture faces downward, letting gravity help the sealant reach it.
- Re-inflate — if the tire holds pressure, the repair was successful.
Larger Punctures (> 3mm, Using a Tubeless Plug)
A tubeless plug (also called a worm plug) is currently the most popular roadside quick-fix solution:
- Locate the puncture — there’s no need to remove the wheel.
- Use the plug insertion tool to push a rubber plug strip into the puncture, until the midpoint of the strip is level with the hole.
- Quickly pull the insertion tool straight out, leaving the plug strip behind to seal the hole.
- Trim off the excess plug material sticking out from the surface with scissors (leave about 2–3mm).
- Inflate and check whether the seal holds; if it’s still leaking, you can insert a second plug alongside the first.
If It Won’t Seal: Switch to Riding It Like a Clincher
If the puncture is too large to seal, you can abandon the tubeless setup and insert a spare inner tube to keep riding:
- Deflate the tire and use a lever to remove one bead.
- Wipe out any excess sealant from inside the rim with a cloth.
- Insert the tube, reseat the bead, inflate, and continue riding.

Before your next big ride, try simulating a roadside repair at home over the weekend — removing the tire, patching it, and reinstalling it — so the whole process becomes muscle memory and you can handle a real roadside breakdown with confidence.
