Climbing Technique: How to Boost Your W/kg on Mountain Roads

Taiwan is a paradise for climbers — from Yangmingshan and Wuling to Taipingshan, mountain roads of every gradient and length offer an outstanding training ground. But many riders simply “go all out” on every climb without systematically improving their climbing ability. This article shows you how to raise your W/kg with a scientific approach.

W/kg: The Most Important Climbing Metric

On flat ground, your power output (W) determines your speed. On a climb, power-to-weight ratio (W/kg) is what matters. A 60kg rider putting out 240W (4.0 W/kg) will out-climb an 80kg rider putting out 280W (3.5 W/kg) by a wide margin.

There are two paths to a higher W/kg:

  1. Raise power (the numerator): increase your FTP
  2. Lower body weight (the denominator): reduce non-functional body fat

Doing both together works best, but you should never sacrifice training intensity just to lose weight.

Power Management on Climbs

Steady Power or Variable Pacing?

Research shows that a steady-power strategy (holding power output as constant as possible for the whole climb) is more efficient than a variable-pacing strategy — it burns the same energy but gets you up faster.

In practice:

  • Set a target power (usually 90–100% of FTP)
  • Don’t get baited into surging just because someone passes you
  • Ease off slightly on downhill or flatter sections to return to your target power

Cadence Strategy

On climbs, should you spin a high cadence (85–95 rpm) or grind a low cadence (60–75 rpm)?

A Systematic Climbing Training Plan

Climbing Strength Training (Torque Pedaling)

Goal: Build muscular strength while training the neuromuscular coordination specific to climbing

How to do it:

  1. Find a 5–8% gradient section
  2. Shift into a big gear so cadence drops to 50–60 rpm
  3. Standing or seated both work — hold for 2–4 minutes
  4. Recover with easy spinning for 3 minutes
  5. Repeat for 4–6 sets

Caution: This puts significant stress on the knees. Limit it to once a week at first.

Threshold Climbing Intervals

Goal: Raise FTP and increase sustained climbing capacity

Method:

  • Find a steady 3–8km climb
  • Ride at 95–105% FTP, repeated 2–4 times
  • Rest between intervals for the same duration as the effort

Recommended Taiwan Segments:

  • North: Yangde Boulevard (7km, avg. 6%)
  • North: Pingjing Street (4km, avg. 8%)
  • Central: Wuling from Qingjing (10km, avg. 6%)
  • South: Shoushan (short climb, multiple repeats)

VO2max Climbing Intervals

Goal: Increase maximal oxygen uptake and boost your explosive power on steep pitches

Method:

  • A short climb at 8–12% gradient
  • 4–5 minutes at maximum effort (roughly 110–120% FTP)
  • Recover slowly downhill for 3–5 minutes
  • Repeat 4–6 times

Climbing Posture and Technique

Seated Climbing

  • Lean slightly forward, weighting the front of the handlebar
  • Heel slightly lower than the toe (-3° to 0° ankle angle)
  • Slide slightly toward the nose of the saddle for hip stability
  • Engage your core to avoid rocking side to side

Standing Climbing (Out of the Saddle)

  • Shift your weight onto the pedals and let the bike rock gently side to side with each stroke
  • Keep a light grip on the bars — don’t strangle them
  • Best used for short bursts or to change your breathing rhythm (under 1 minute)
  • Standing burns roughly 10% more energy than sitting

Mental Strategy

On long climbs, your biggest enemy is a mental breakdown. Effective strategies:

  1. Break it into segments: Divide a mountain into 3–4 sections, each with its own mini-goal
  2. Focus your attention: Concentrate on cadence and breathing, not the distance remaining
  3. Breathing rhythm: Establish a steady breathing pattern, such as inhaling every two pedal strokes
  4. Fueling timing: Fuel before the climb begins, not after you already need it

The Right Mindset on Weight Management

Losing weight is an effective way to raise your W/kg, but keep these points in mind:

  • Manage your weight during the base phase, not during peak training
  • Lose no more than 0.5–1kg per week to avoid muscle loss
  • Don’t over-restrict calories on training days — it hurts recovery
  • The goal is lowering body fat percentage, not weight loss for its own sake

Taiwan’s hot climate means you lose fluids fast on climbs — never restrict hydration just because you’re “trying to lose weight.”

A 6-Month Climbing Improvement Plan
