Training Load and Fatigue Management: The Practical Use of CTL, ATL, and TSB
Many cyclists train hard, yet often find themselves in poor form on race day — either too fatigued or under-trained. Scientific training load management, using the three metrics CTL, ATL, and TSB, helps you precisely control your fitness and form.

The Basic Concept: TSS (Training Stress Score)
Before understanding CTL/ATL/TSB, you first need to understand TSS (Training Stress Score).
TSS formula:
TSS = (Training duration in minutes x Intensity Factor squared x 100) / 3600

- Beginner: 30-50
- Serious amateur: 60-90
- High-level amateur: 90-120
- Professional rider: 130-180
How to Build CTL?
Steadily increasing training volume is the only way to raise CTL:
- Increase weekly training volume by 10% (conservative but safe)
- Schedule a recovery week after every 3 weeks of increase
- Avoid sudden large increases in training volume (high injury risk)
ATL: Acute Training Load (Fatigue)
ATL (Acute Training Load) is the weighted average of TSS over the past 7 days, representing your current level of fatigue.
- Higher ATL: More fatigued, requiring more recovery
- ATL rising quickly after training: Indicates high training stress
- ATL should drop before a race: Tapering allows the body to recover
TSB: Training Stress Balance (Form)
TSB (Training Stress Balance) = CTL - ATL
TSB represents your “form,” a metric for whether you are in peak condition at a given moment.

Typical 2-Week Taper Plan
Days 14 to 8 before the race:
- Reduce training volume by 30-40%
- Keep 2-3 short high-intensity intervals (5-10 minutes)
- Add more rest days
Days 7 to 3 before the race:
- Reduce training volume by another 30%
- Brief high-intensity stimulus (to maintain muscle memory)
- Easy ride of 30-45 minutes daily
Day 2 before the race: Complete rest or a 15-minute very easy ride
Day 1 before the race: 20-30 minute easy ride with 2-3 x 30-second sprints, and check your bike condition
Warning Signs of Overtraining
When TSB stays below -30 for an extended period and the following symptoms appear, you need to taper immediately:
- Persistent fatigue (still tired no matter how much you sleep)
- Resting heart rate 5-10 beats higher than usual
- Declining training power/speed
- Low mood, irritability
- Reduced sleep quality
- Loss of motivation for training
Recovering from Overtraining
- Complete rest or very light aerobic activity (swimming, slow walking)
- Do not force yourself to maintain training volume
- Increase sleep duration
- Ensure adequate protein and carbohydrate intake
- Full recovery typically takes 2-6 weeks

- Consider training in the early morning or evening to avoid peak heat hours
