Triathlon Gear Checklist: What You Need for Swim, Bike, and Run

Triathlon combines swimming, cycling, and running, so the gear requirements are the sum of all three disciplines plus a few triathlon-specific items. This guide covers the full equipment checklist from Sprint distance to Olympic distance, split into essential and advanced gear.

Triathlon Distance Categories

Distance Swim Bike Run Notes
Super Sprint 400m 10km 2.5km Beginner
Sprint 750m 20km 5km Short distance
Olympic 1.5km 40km 10km Standard distance
70.3 Half Ironman 1.9km 90km 21.1km Long distance
140.6 Full Ironman 3.8km 180km 42.2km Ultra distance

First-timers are advised to start with Sprint or Olympic distance.

Swim Gear

Essential Gear

Goggles:
Triathlon swim legs are usually open water (ocean or lake), so mirrored-lens open water goggles are recommended for glare protection and a wide field of view.

  • Recommended: Speedo Fastskin Elite Mirror (NT$1,200-1,800)
  • Recommended: Aqua Sphere Kayenne (NT$1,000-1,500)

Swim Cap:
Races usually provide one, but it’s worth bringing your own silicone cap for training so you get used to the feel.

Advanced Gear

Wetsuit:
Strongly recommended for open water swimming, especially given Taiwan’s cold winter sea temperatures. A wetsuit provides:

  • Warmth (suitable for water temperatures of 15-24°C)
  • Added buoyancy (roughly 5-10% speed increase)
  • Confidence (psychological reassurance)

For Taiwan’s standard-distance races, wetsuits usually aren’t mandatory once water temperature is above 20°C, but most athletes wear one anyway.

Recommended Wetsuits:

  • 2XU Propel (NT$8,000-12,000): Great value, common in the Taiwan market
  • Orca S7 (NT$6,000-9,000): Entry-level, suited to first-time triathletes

Bike Gear

Essential Gear

Road Bike or TT/Triathlon Bike:
A regular road bike is fine for your first triathlon — no need to switch to a TT bike specifically.

  • Standard distance: any road bike or city bike works
  • Half-Iron distance and up: aerodynamics matter more, and a TT bike offers a clear advantage

Helmet: Triathlon bike-leg timing starts the moment you leave transition (T1) with your helmet on, and it must be worn the entire ride.

Cycling Shoes + Clipless Pedals: The bike leg of a triathlon is high intensity, and a clipless pedal system offers a clear efficiency advantage.

Bike Computer or GPS Watch: Tracks speed, distance, and heart rate. Garmin or COROS both work well.

Advanced Gear

Aero Bars (Tri Bars):
Aerodynamic extension bars mounted on the road bike’s stem that let the rider adopt a TT position, significantly cutting wind resistance. Worth considering for Olympic distance and up.

  • Taiwan price: NT$2,000-8,000

Aero Helmet: Lower wind resistance than a standard helmet, saving several minutes over a long race. Not essential for first-timers, but worth considering for 70.3 and above.

Run Gear

Essential Gear

Running Shoes: The most important piece of gear for the run (see our earlier article on full marathon running gear)
Running Apparel (stretch fabric): Suited to a quick transition from the bike
Running Cap or Sun Hat: Essential in Taiwan’s summer heat for sun protection and heatstroke prevention

Advanced Gear

Elastic Lock Laces:
Let you slip shoes on quickly in transition without tying laces, saving 15-30 seconds. Costs about NT$300-500 in Taiwan.

Triathlon-Specific Gear

Trisuit (Tri Suit)

A single garment worn for the entire race: swim, bike, and run. Features:

  • Thin chamois pad (thinner than cycling shorts, since a thick pad increases drag in the water)
  • Quick-dry fabric
  • Hydrodynamic design

Taiwan prices:

  • Entry-level: NT$2,000-4,000
  • Mid-range: NT$5,000-10,000
  • Race-level (brands like 2XU/Orca/Zone3): NT$8,000-20,000

Transition Gear

  • Cycling Gloves (optional): Adds palm comfort
  • Race Belt: Holds your race number on the outside during the run leg, no need to pin it to your clothing
  • Transition Bag Organization: Practice laying items out in order in advance to cut down on transition time

Gear Budget Planning

First-Time Sprint Distance (Entry-Level Budget)

Item Budget (NTD)
Goggles 1,200
Wetsuit (used option available) 3,000-6,000
Road bike (already owned) 0
Helmet 2,000
Cycling shoes + pedals 3,000
GPS watch 5,000-8,000
Running shoes 3,000-5,000
Trisuit (can substitute cycling kit + quick-dry swim shorts) 2,000
Race belt 300
Total Approx. 19,500-27,300

Standard Distance Upgrade

Building on the entry-level setup, add: a wetsuit upgrade (+NT$3,000), Aero Bars (+NT$3,000), and a trisuit upgrade (+NT$5,000), for roughly NT$11,000 more.

Conclusion

Triathlon gear can be as simple or as expensive as you make it, but for your first race, finishing the event matters far more than the gear itself. After completing your first Sprint triathlon, you’ll have a clear sense of which area you want to improve, and upgrading gear with that in mind is the most efficient strategy.
