Choosing Protective Gear for Cyclists: How to Protect Your Wrists and Knees

Cycling may look like a low-impact activity, but prolonged repetitive motion and poor posture often lead to chronic injuries. The wrists and knees are the most commonly injured areas among cyclists. This article takes a deep dive into protective strategies for these two body parts.


Wrist Injuries: Causes and Prevention

Common Wrist Problems

  1. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Compression of the median nerve, causing numbness and tingling in the fingers
  2. Ulnar Nerve Compression: Numbness in the pinky and ring finger, caused by pressure from the handlebar on the ulnar side of the palm
  3. Wrist Extensor Fatigue: Tendon inflammation caused by maintaining a bent wrist position for long periods

Root Causes

Most wrist problems stem from the following causes:

  • Handlebars set too low, forcing excessive wrist extension
  • Insufficient shock absorption from gloves
  • Bearing too much weight through the hands during long rides
  • Handlebar width that doesn’t match shoulder width

Choosing Gloves

Handlebar tape on a road bike directly affects the forces transmitted to the wrist. Quality handlebar tape (such as Lizard Skins or Fizik) provides more even vibration absorption than cheap tape. Recommended replacement frequency: every 3,000-5,000 km of riding, or whenever you notice the rebound cushioning has diminished.

The Golden Rule of Saddle Height

Correct saddle height is the single most important factor in preventing knee injuries. A commonly used method is the “bottom of the pedal stroke angle” test:

When the pedal is at its lowest point (6 o’clock position), the knee should be bent at roughly 25-35 degrees — not fully straight, and not overly bent.

Quick self-test method:

  1. While wearing cycling shoes, place your heel (not the ball of your foot) on the pedal
  2. At the lowest point of the pedal stroke, your knee should be just about straight, or only slightly bent
  3. Switch back to pedaling with the ball of your foot, and a natural 25-35 degree bend will result

Cleat Adjustment

Cleat position and angle directly affect the knee’s range of motion:

  1. Fore-aft position: Align the first metatarsal (the bone at the base of the big toe) with the pedal axle
  2. Left-right position: Position as close to the inside of the pedal as possible to reduce the Q-factor
  3. Angle (Float): It’s recommended to choose cleats with a larger float angle (such as 9°), allowing the knee to naturally settle into a comfortable angle

Protective gear is the last line of defense — proper bike fit and physical conditioning are the real foundation. Investing time in prevention beforehand is far more worthwhile than rehabilitation after an injury.
