Climbing is one of the purest applications of physics in cycling. On mountain roads, speed is almost entirely determined by a single number: Power-to-Weight Ratio (W/kg).

Two Paths to Improving W/kg
Path One: Increase Power (Increase the Numerator)
Threshold Training (FTP Improvement):
- Sweet Spot (88-93% FTP): 20-60 minutes per session
- Threshold Intervals: 5-15 minute repeat sets
- Timeline: 3-8% improvement every 6-8 weeks (early in training)
VO2max Training (Raising the Ceiling):
- 3-8 minute intervals at 106-120% FTP
- Improves oxygen uptake capacity after training
- FTP typically follows suit
Path Two: Reduce Body Weight (Decrease the Denominator)
For riders with an existing training base, reducing body fat is often the faster way to improve W/kg.
Realistic Goals:
- The goal isn’t “lighter is better,” but rather optimizing body fat while maintaining power
- Appropriate body fat percentage for men: 10-15%
- Appropriate body fat percentage for women: 16-22%
Safe Weight Loss Rate: No more than 0.5-0.7 kg per week, to avoid muscle loss
Path Three: Optimize Both (Most Effective)
Best strategy: maintain a slight caloric deficit (-300 to -400 kcal/day) while ensuring sufficient caloric intake to support training, alongside power training.

Why Can’t You Just Use Heart Rate?
Heart rate is influenced by many factors (temperature, caffeine, fatigue, stress) and cannot accurately reflect power output. A power meter provides a direct physical measurement.
