Having watched Pogačar’s decisive attack on the Stelvio, or van der Poel dropping the group on the gravel of Strade Bianche, it’s easy to get the impression that “out-of-the-saddle climbing is all about raw power.” In reality, every 30-second out-of-the-saddle effort by a pro has a specific purpose: disrupting rivals’ rhythm, accelerating over the summit, powering up short steep pitches, or the final kick out. The technical details are completely different.
Taiwan’s terrain is full of short, steep climbs (the lower section of Fengguizui, Ershui to Checheng, Shiding’s Shicaobi, etc.), and your ability to climb out of the saddle directly determines your survival rate in the group. This article provides 5 different 30-second out-of-the-saddle workouts, each with a specific goal, taking you from pure strength training to tactical application.
Basic Out-of-the-Saddle Technique Points
Before diving into the 5 variations, make sure your basic form is correct:
- Lean your upper body forward, hands on the drops or the top of the hoods, not on the center of the handlebar
- The bike rocks side to side, your body stays centered – the bike moves, not your body
- Pull the bar on the same side as your pedaling foot: when your right foot pushes down, your left hand pulls up
- Use your body weight to drive the pedals: it’s not about brute force, but letting your weight fall onto the pedals
- Maintain a cadence of 70-80 rpm: below 65 rpm becomes pure muscular force and is hard on the knees
Five 30-Second Out-of-the-Saddle Workout Variations
| Variation | Intensity | Cadence | Duration | Target Ability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Explosive Power | 150-200% FTP | 90-100 | 15 sec × 10 | Anaerobic power, ATP-PCr |
| Rhythm | 110-130% FTP | 70-80 | 30 sec × 8 | Muscular endurance, shifting rhythm |
| Summit Acceleration | 120-140% FTP | 80-90 | 30 sec × 6 | Gearing response, lactate tolerance |
| Short Steep Surge | 140-160% FTP | 60-70 | 20 sec × 8 | Maximal strength, low-cadence power |
| Final Kick Out | 130-150% FTP | 90-110 | 30 sec × 5 | End-of-race sprint, neural recruitment |
Variation 1: Explosive Power (15 sec × 10)
- Goal: Train the ATP-PCr system, pure anaerobic explosiveness
- Workout: 20 min warm-up → 10 sets of 15 sec max effort out of the saddle + 2:45 recovery (3 min between sets) → 15 min cool-down
- Note: Power drop should be <10% at the end of each set. If it drops more than 15% after set 5, you’re overdoing it – end the workout
- Terrain: The final 200 meters of Fengguizui, the short steep section at Chinese Culture University on Yangde Boulevard
Variation 2: Rhythm (30 sec × 8)
- Goal: Train muscular endurance for sustained out-of-the-saddle efforts, simulating a 5-minute climb at 3-5% grade
- Workout: 15 min warm-up → 8 sets of 30 sec @ 120% FTP + 1:30 seated recovery → 10 min cool-down
- Technique: Keep the bike’s rocking motion small, sync your breathing rhythm with your cadence
- Terrain: Artificial flat-road gradient (trainer at 5-6% incline), Xinsheng Park section of Zhongshe Road
Variation 3: Summit Acceleration (30 sec × 6)
- Goal: Simulate accelerating 100 meters before the summit to break the group, or a solo attack
- Workout: Before each effort, ride 5 min at Tempo (80% FTP), then 30 sec out of the saddle at 135% FTP, then return to Tempo for 1 min. Repeat 6 times.
- Key Point: Train the mental and physical resilience to “accelerate even when already tired”
- Terrain: The first section of the Nine Bends and Eighteen Turns on Yangjin Highway, Songbailing section of County Road 139
Variation 4: Short Steep Surge (20 sec × 8)
- Goal: Specifically for 15-20% short steep walls (like Shiding’s Huangdi Dian, Maokong’s Hupo Bridge)
- Workout: 8 sets of 20 sec @ 150% FTP at low cadence (60-70 rpm) out of the saddle, with 3 min recovery between sets
- Technique: Hands on the hoods, upper body leaning lower, deliberately keep cadence low and rely on body weight to push
- Warning: Very hard on the knees – do this at most once a week, and avoid it entirely if you have knee issues
Variation 5: Final Kick Out (30 sec × 5)
- Goal: End-of-race sprint or the explosive surge 300 meters before a climbing finish
- Workout: First ride 15 min at 85% FTP Tempo, then do 5 sets of “10 sec seated acceleration → 20 sec standing kick out to the max,” with 5 min full recovery between sets
- Feature: Simulates squeezing out the last drop of energy when already exhausted – the mental challenge is greater than the physical
- Terrain: Any straight section 300-500 meters before a climbing finish
Suggested Weekly Out-of-the-Saddle Schedule
Out-of-the-saddle work is a high neural recruitment training, requiring significant recovery. It’s recommended to do it 1-2 times per week, on separate days from VO2max intervals:
| Day | Content |
|---|---|
| Mon | Rest |
| Tue | Out-of-the-saddle workout (e.g., Variation 1 or 3) |
| Wed | Zone 2 |
| Thu | Sweet Spot |
| Fri | Rest |
| Sat | Long Z2 ride + weekend out-of-the-saddle Variation 2 or 4 |
| Sun | Easy recovery ride |
Common Mistakes
- Using force instead of technique: Out-of-the-saddle climbing isn’t about brute strength; it’s about body weight and leverage
- Trying to hold on past 30 seconds: After 30 seconds, phosphocreatine is depleted. Continuing just grinds out lactate with limited benefit
- Wrong gear selection: You should shift up 1-2 gears (harder gear) before standing up, otherwise your cadence will spin out past 120 rpm and you won’t produce power
- Weight too far forward: Too much weight on the front will cause the rear wheel to slip (especially in the rain). Keep about 40% of your weight on the rear foot
Conclusion
Out-of-the-saddle climbing is a refined technical skill, not just “standing up and stomping.” These 5 variations cover the full spectrum from pure explosiveness, rhythm maintenance, summit acceleration, short steep surges, to the final sprint. Incorporate them into your weekly training and practice them on real terrain. The next time you hit the short, steep climbs of Shiding or Fengguizui, you’ll have the ability to decide whether you’re in the top three of the group or watching others ride away.
