“With 6 hours a week, how should I allocate it?” “Is more high intensity always better?” “Should I train Threshold or Zone 2?” The answers to all these questions point to the same principle: The 80/20 Polarized Training Rule.
This rule was proposed by Norwegian sports scientist Stephen Seiler in the early 2000s. After analyzing the training logs of world champions in endurance sports such as cross-country skiing, rowing, long-distance running, and cycling, he found a common pattern: 80% of the time is spent in Zone 1-2 (low intensity), 20% in Zone 4-5 (high intensity), and Zone 3 (moderate intensity) is almost deliberately avoided.

Method 2: TSS Distribution
Based on accumulated TSS: 80% of TSS comes from low intensity, 20% from high intensity. This method is more practical for amateur cyclists, because high intensity accumulates TSS quickly even in short durations.
Method 3: Session Distribution
80% of training sessions are low-intensity focused, 20% are high-intensity. This is the simplest for busy office workers.
Amateur cyclists are advised to use Method 3 — out of 6 weekly sessions, 5 are Z1-Z2 (with occasional SST), and 1-2 are VO2max or Threshold intervals.

Three Common Misconceptions About 80/20
Misconception 1: “Zone 3 Should Never Be Trained”
Not true. SST (88-94% FTP) plays a key role in periodization, but it should not become the main body of training. Zone 3 can appear, but should not exceed 10-15%.
Misconception 2: “The Slower the Low Intensity, the Better”
Zone 1 is not Zone 2. Zone 1 is recovery; Zone 2 is training. Of the 80% low intensity, most should be true Zone 2 (65-75% FTP), not casual Zone 1 riding.
Misconception 3: “Any Hard Effort Counts as High Intensity”
Zone 5 is the intensity that “reaches VO2max,” not “feels very breathless.” Most people think they’re in Zone 5 when they’re actually at the tail end of Zone 4. A power meter is needed for precise execution.
Three Steps to Implement 80/20
- Honestly review your current distribution: Use Intervals.icu or TrainingPeaks to check last month’s Zone distribution. Most amateur cyclists will find they’re in a “50/30/20” gray-zone training pattern.
- Cut Zone 3 junk miles: If you often find yourself in Zone 3 during weekday rides, deliberately drop to Zone 2. If it feels too easy, that means you’ve been overtraining in the gray zone all along.
- Add true Zone 5 work: Ensure 1-2 VO2max interval sessions per week with high quality (heart rate reaching 92%+ of MaxHR).
Practical Challenges for Taiwanese Cyclists
- Group rides easily drift into Z3: Riding with a small group on weekdays tends to pull you into Tempo. Ride solo or join a slower group instead
- Mountains make intensity hard to control: Heart rate climbs easily into Z4 on climbs. If it’s a Z2 day, avoid hard climbs or use cadence control
- Weather effects: Summer heat inflates heart rate; at the same power, heart rate can be 8-10 bpm higher
