Why Does Your Heart Rate “Creep Up” on the Back Half of Wuling?
Many riders tackling the West Approach to Wuling notice a common phenomenon: in the early section at 1700m, holding Z3 is easy at 145 bpm, but around Yuanfeng at 2750m, even though your legs feel slower and power has dropped 15~20W, your heart rate is still floating at 150 bpm and won’t come down.
This isn’t equipment failure—it’s the classic “Cardiac Drift,” which is amplified 2~3 times at high altitude.
The 3 Stacked Mechanisms Behind Heart Rate Drift
1. Plasma Volume Reduction
Climbing Wuling for 4~5 hours means losing 1.5~3 liters of fluid through sweat alone. As blood becomes more concentrated, stroke volume drops 5~10%, forcing your heart rate up to maintain the same oxygen delivery.
2. Rising Core Body Temperature
For every 1°C rise in core temperature, heart rate increases by roughly 7~10 bpm. Starting the early Wuling section from Puli to Wushe in 28°C conditions means this heat accumulation is more likely to push your HR higher in the middle and later stages.
3. High-Altitude Hypoxia
From 2750m upward, arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2) drops from 98% at sea level to about 88~92%. To maintain oxygen delivery, your heart rate rises an additional 5~10 bpm—a unique “oxygen compensation” effect at altitude.

How to Monitor HR Drift with Your Bike Computer
Method 1: HR/Power Ratio (Pw:Hr)
Built into both Garmin and Wahoo. The normal range should not vary more than 5% within any 30-minute window. If it exceeds 5%, you are in a state of “heart rate drift” and need to:
- Take in 200ml of sodium-containing fluid (to speed up plasma volume restoration)
- Reduce power by 5~10W
- Open up your upper body and take 5 deep breaths (to lower core temperature)
Method 2: Decoupling Index
Provided by TrainingPeaks. >5% indicates insufficient aerobic base, <5% means your pacing is physiologically sound.
Race-Day Tactics: 3 HR Drift Warning Points
Warning Point 1: Renzhiguan (1148m)
If HR is more than 8 bpm above target, it means you pushed too hard in the first 20K. Immediately drop to mid-Z2 and take 1 pack of salt tablets.
Warning Point 2: Cuifeng (2300m)
With HR drift compounded by altitude effects, if you’re still grinding in Z3 here, cramps will start within the next 5K. Recommended adjustment: “75 RPM cadence, Z2 heart rate, and let power drop naturally by 10% with altitude.”
Warning Point 3: Yuanfeng (2750m)
After entering 2750m, lower your HR ceiling by 10 bpm immediately. If your Z3 ceiling was 158, change it to 148 after Yuanfeng. Better to go slower than to let HR blow up—nine out of ten riders who can’t make it up this final 11K lose control of their heart rate.
HR Drift Training in the 14 Days Before the Race
It is recommended to complete 2 sessions of “3-hour HR drift tolerance training” before race day:
- Hold Z2 intensity for 3 hours
- Record HR/Power every 30 minutes
- If drift exceeds 7%, add another 200ml of fluid intake next time
Conclusion
Heart rate drift on Wuling isn’t a fitness problem—it’s the combined response to “cumulative environmental load.” As long as you learn to read HR drift and proactively cut power by 5~15W, the final 11K won’t break you.
