Undulating Periodization

Model

  • Rotates different intensities and training types within the same week
  • Alternates high-intensity and low-intensity sessions

Block Periodization

Model

  • Focuses on a single energy system every 2–4 weeks
  • Moves to the next block only after one block is completed
  • Each block is followed by 1 week of tapering

  • W1–W3: Strength block (weight training + hill sprints)
  • W4: Taper
  • W5–W7: VO2max block (high-intensity intervals)
  • W8: Taper

Amateurs can also follow this logic: use linear periodization for the first major race of the year, then switch to undulating periodization to maintain fitness.

Monitoring Metrics

Regardless of which model you choose, you should monitor:

  • Weekly training load (TSS, distance, time)
  • HRV (heart rate variability)
  • Rating of perceived exertion (RPE)
  • Sleep quality
  • Monthly testing (FTP, 5K time, threshold run pace)
