Butterfly Dolphin Wave: A Beginner's Breakdown of Spinal Rhythm and Core Transfer

單車訓練

Is the Butterfly Really That Hard?

The butterfly is considered the hardest of the four strokes, but what makes it difficult isn’t strength—it’s the full-body coordinated undulation rhythm (Body Undulation). Once you master the dolphin wave, the butterfly becomes one of the most energy-efficient strokes for long distances.

The Wave Energy Transfer Chain

The butterfly’s power comes from a “wave” initiated by the head, passing through in sequence:

Chest press down → Hips drive up → Thighs follow → Lower legs and feet whip out

This works on the same principle as cracking a whip: energy is amplified as it travels from the proximal end to the distal end.

5 Drills (From Easy to Hard)

Stage Drill Goal
1 Standing in water, perform chest-hip undulation Feel the spinal rhythm
2 Prone float + dolphin kick (arms extended forward) Build lower-body whip-like transfer
3 Side-lying dolphin kick Strengthen core transfer
4 Single-arm butterfly Integrate arm and leg timing
5 Full butterfly with 2 kicks per 1 pull Establish complete rhythm

Timing of the Two Kicks

One full arm cycle in butterfly includes two dolphin kicks:

  • First kick: As the hands enter the water, helping drive the body forward
  • Second kick: As the hands push through the water toward the thighs, helping the arms recover out of the water

The most common mistake for beginners is “only doing one big kick,” which breaks the rhythm.

Beginner Training Recommendations

Focus each session primarily on kicking (about 60%), with arm integration as secondary. First aim for a smooth 25m, then aim for 50m without breaking rhythm. Better slow and continuous than fast and falling apart.

Sports biomechanics research indicates that elite butterfly swimmers activate their core muscles (transversus abdominis, multifidus) 0.15 seconds earlier than amateurs—this is the key to smooth wave transmission.
