Breathing Is More Than Inhaling: It’s Balance and Direction
Breathing is the most underestimated technical aspect of freestyle. It affects not just oxygen supply, but also body symmetry, roll amplitude, and straight-line swimming. Choose the wrong breathing pattern, and you might swim in a snake-like path your whole life without realizing it.
Bilateral vs. Unilateral: The Core Trade-off
| Comparison | Bilateral Breathing (every 3 strokes) | Unilateral Breathing (every 2 strokes) |
|---|---|---|
| Symmetry | Good, balanced left-right roll | Poor, dominant side overdeveloped |
| Straight-line swimming | Good, reduces yaw | More prone to drifting toward the non-breathing side |
| Oxygen supply | Lower (longer intervals) | Higher (every two strokes) |
| High-intensity suitability | More demanding | Better suited for sprints/races |
| Open-water navigation | Can sight both sides, more flexible | Can only sight one side |
The scientific conclusion is actually “you need both”: use bilateral breathing to train symmetry and straight-line swimming, and unilateral breathing to meet oxygen demands in high-intensity efforts and races.
Why Bilateral Breathing Corrects Snake-Like Swimming
People who habitually breathe to one side have a larger roll and longer stroke on the breathing side, while the non-breathing side has a smaller roll and shorter stroke. Over time, this creates asymmetric propulsion between left and right, naturally pulling you to one side. Bilateral breathing forces symmetrical roll and timing on both sides—it’s the cheapest “straight-line corrector” available.
Exhaling Matters More Than Inhaling
The most common mistake among adult swimmers is holding their breath: not exhaling while the face is in the water, then exhaling and inhaling at the same time when turning the head. This leaves insufficient time, causing hypoxia, tension, and breakdown of body position.
The correct approach: start exhaling continuously and slowly through the nose or mouth as soon as your face enters the water. By the time you turn your head, your lungs are nearly empty, so you only need to focus on “inhaling”—short and relaxed. The mantra: “Keep exhaling in the water; when you surface, just inhale.”
Flexible Breathing Strategies for Open Water
Don’t stick to a single pattern in races:
- Calm, downstream sections: use bilateral breathing to maintain symmetry and conserve energy.
- High-intensity/start sprint: switch to unilateral to ensure oxygen supply.
- Waves coming from one side: breathe toward the side away from the waves to avoid swallowing water.
- When drafting: breathe toward the side where you can see the leader and navigation targets.
Being able to switch freely based on the situation is the hallmark of an advanced open-water swimmer.
Training Plan (4 Weeks)
- Week 1: 8×50 meters of forced bilateral breathing (every 3 strokes) to build comfort on the non-dominant side.
- Week 2: Add a “breathing pyramid”—3, 5, 7, 5, 3 stroke breathing cycles—to train CO₂ tolerance.
- Week 3: Alternate unilateral/bilateral lengths to feel the symmetry difference.
- Week 4: Open-water or pool simulation of race scenarios with flexible switching.
Coach’s note: If you could change only one thing about your breathing, make it “exhale continuously in the water.” Ninety percent of breathing panic and form breakdown stems from breath-holding, not from not inhaling enough.
Once your breathing is dialed in, you’ll find that swimming the same distance results in a lower heart rate and a more relaxed body—this is a dividend of technique, not fitness.
