The Physics of Swimming Fast: Not More Force, but Less Resistance

Many people assume that swimming fast comes from “pulling harder,” but water resistance increases in proportion to the square or even higher power of speed. This means: at high speeds, most of the extra effort you expend is consumed by added drag. For long-distance swimmers and triathletes, the return on investment from reducing drag far exceeds that of increasing propulsion.

Three Types of Drag

For the average swimmer, form drag accounts for the largest share—and it is almost entirely determined by posture, requiring no equipment to improve.

Form Drag: The Biggest, and the Most Controllable

Form drag depends on your “frontal surface area.” Common mistakes that increase form drag:

  1. Hips and legs sinking: The angle between your body and the water surface increases, drastically enlarging your frontal area. Fix: press the head slightly, engage the core, and kick to lift the lower body.
  2. Lifting the head too high: The hips will inevitably sink. Fix: keep your gaze toward the bottom-front of the pool.
  3. Excessive roll or side-to-side swaying: You throw your side into the water flow. Fix: use your core to control roll to about 30–45 degrees.
  4. Hand crossing the midline: Your body snakes in an S-shape. Fix: align the hand entry point with your shoulder line.

Mnemonic: The more your body resembles a straight wooden rod piercing through the water, the less form drag you create.

Wave Drag: More Important as Speed Increases

When you swim near the surface, your body generates waves that carry away energy. Keys to reducing wave drag:

  • Reduce vertical body movement (especially avoid bobbing of the head and hips).
  • After starts and turns, use underwater streamlined gliding (dolphin kicks), because there is no wave-making underwater—it is the lowest-drag state of the entire swim.
  • When breathing, don’t lift the head; only rotate it.

Friction Drag: The Accumulation of Details

Although it accounts for the smallest share, it still matters in high-level competition: low-friction racing suits, pre-race shaving, and avoiding sloppy movements. For amateur athletes, its priority is lower than form drag and wave drag, but smooth movements themselves reduce unnecessary turbulence.

Quantifying Your Progress

The simplest field-test metrics are Distance Per Stroke (DPS) and SWOLF (time per lap + stroke count). When drag decreases, your stroke count at the same speed will drop, and your SWOLF will decrease. Treat it as your “efficiency dashboard.”

Coach’s note: Before you think “I need to pull harder,” first ask, “Where am I creating extra drag?” Lifting a sinking hip often beats a whole winter of strength training.

Swimming is one of the few sports where “the smarter you train, the faster you can go with less effort”—provided you understand drag.
