One Pair of Goggles Could Decide Your Open-Water Performance

Many athletes spend big money on wetsuits and watches, yet race with a pair of goggles that fog up and have a narrow field of view—resulting in poor sighting all race and swimming extra distance. Goggles are not a disposable accessory; they are your only navigation interface in open water.

Lens Tint: Match It to the Light Conditions

Open-water races often have you swimming into the sun, so polarized or mirror lenses can greatly improve buoy visibility; but if the course includes dark or sunset periods, overly dark lenses will make it hard to see—always choose based on the race time and direction.

Field of View: Open Water Needs Width

Competition goggles have small frames that sit close to the eyes with low drag, but peripheral vision is narrow. Open water requires quick scanning of buoys, competitors, and the shoreline, so you should choose open-water models with a wider field of view and larger frames so you don’t have to turn your head much when sighting.

Fit and Leakage

Leaks are usually not a silicone gasket problem, but rather:

  1. The nose bridge width doesn’t fit (most goggles come with interchangeable nose bridges—be sure to adjust).
  2. The strap is too loose or positioned too high/low.
  3. You didn’t press the lens cups against your eye sockets to create a seal before fastening the strap.

Fit test: without the strap, press the lens cups against your eye sockets—they should briefly hold on without falling off, meaning the gasket matches your face shape.

Anti-Fog: How It Works and Proper Use

Fogging is caused by moisture condensing from the temperature difference between the inside and outside of the lens. Most new goggles come with a factory anti-fog coating, and improper cleaning (rubbing the inside with your fingers) will destroy it. Recommendations:

  • Don’t rub the inside of new goggles; once the coating wears off, use an anti-fog solution or a drop of diluted dish soap, gently spread, then rinse lightly.
  • Don’t leave goggles sitting on your forehead for a long time before a race (body heat + sweat accelerates fogging).
  • Spit is only marginally effective in an emergency and is unhygienic—having anti-fog solution ready before the race is more reliable.

Swim Caps and Other Accessories

  • Swim cap: Silicone caps offer better warmth and slip resistance than latex; for open water, choose bright colors (orange/fluorescent yellow) for better safety visibility. In cold water, you can double up or use a thermal cap.
  • Tow float: Essential for solo or small-group open-water training—safety first.
  • Anti-chafe lubricant: Apply to the neck and armpits of the wetsuit to reduce chafing and speed up T1.

Coach’s note: When buying goggles, first think “where and at what time do I mainly swim,” then decide on lens tint; confirm the nose bridge and face fit before talking about brands. A pair of goggles that fits your face, offers a wide field of view, and doesn’t leak or fog will help your open-water performance as much as an expensive wetsuit.

The value of gear isn’t in its price—it’s in whether it solves your real problem.
