The Value of Cross-Training Between Breaststroke and Freestyle: Why Triathletes Should Take Breaststroke Seriously
Don’t Treat Breaststroke as “Something You Only Swim If You Can’t Do Freestyle”
The triathlon and long-distance swimming community generally prioritizes freestyle and downplays breaststroke, often treating it as a filler stroke for “a couple of strokes when you’re tired and need a rest.” This actually wastes a tactical asset. For open-water swimmers, seriously developing your breaststroke offers three practical values that freestyle cannot provide.
Value One: Head-Up Breaststroke Is the “Observation and Regulation Mode” for Open Water
In open water, you often need to briefly “lift your head to check the situation” during chaos, navigation, or when regulating your breathing. Head-up freestyle is very energy-draining and hard to sustain, but head-up breaststroke lets you move forward, clearly see ahead and around you, and get your breathing back under control all at once. Being able to smoothly switch to a few breaststroke strokes when panicked or disrupted, steady yourself, then switch back to freestyle is a crucial self-rescue and regulation skill in open water—provided you’ve practiced it in training, not learning it on race day.
Value Two: Breathing Flexibility and a Psychological Buffer
Breaststroke breathing is natural, requires no head rotation, and has a relaxed rhythm. When your freestyle breathing is disrupted by waves, you swallow water, or your heart rate spirals out of control, breaststroke provides a physiological and psychological buffer gear. People who can “downshift” into breaststroke have an escape route when things go wrong and are less likely to completely fall apart; those who only know freestyle have no Plan B once their freestyle breaks down.
Value Three: Sharing the Load Across Different Muscle Groups and Recovery
Breaststroke uses different muscle groups and force patterns than freestyle (more adductors, a different shoulder loading pattern). Inserting short stretches of breaststroke into long sessions gives the primary freestyle muscles and shoulders a partial breather, which aids endurance distribution over long distances. Using easy breaststroke for recovery intervals in long sessions is also a reasonable choice.
But You Need to Swim the “Right” Breaststroke
The premise for treating breaststroke as an asset is that your technique can’t be too poor, or it will be both tiring and hard on your lower back (see swimmer’s back risk). Key points:

- Practice head-up breaststroke specifically: 6×50 meters of head-up breaststroke, simulating open-water observation/regulation scenarios, with the requirement of a low head position and no lower-back strain.
- Practice transitions: Drill the smooth transition of “freestyle → 3 breaststroke strokes to regulate → back to freestyle” until it becomes instinctive.
- Core support work: Since breaststroke loads the lumbar spine, pair it with anti-extension core training (dead bugs, bird dogs).
Coach’s note: You’re not training breaststroke to race with it in a triathlon; you’re training it so that during “those 30 seconds when freestyle falls apart,” you have a gear that can save you. One more usable stroke means more composure in open water.
Treat breaststroke as your safety net, not your weakness.
