The Interference Effect of Strength and Endurance Training: How to Schedule So You Don't Lose Out on Both
What Is the Interference Effect
When strength training and endurance training are performed too close together in time, their cellular signaling pathways may interfere with each other, weakening each other’s adaptations—this is the well-known interference effect, or concurrent training effect.
Simplified mechanism: Strength training primarily promotes muscle protein synthesis and strength adaptations through the mTOR pathway; endurance training activates the AMPK and PGC-1α pathways to promote mitochondrial biogenesis. When the metabolic stress of high-intensity endurance training is excessive and closely follows strength training, AMPK activation may suppress mTOR, weakening strength and muscle hypertrophy adaptations.
For endurance athletes, the good news is: endurance adaptations are less affected by interference from strength training; what is truly compromised is strength/power adaptations. Therefore, the goal of scheduling is to “protect the quality of strength training.”
Key Factors Influencing the Degree of Interference

Golden Principles of Scheduling
Principle 1: Use Different Days Whenever Possible
Ideally, strength and high-intensity endurance training should be on separate days. On heavy lower-body days, only pair with low-intensity recovery riding/running or complete rest.
Principle 2: When on the Same Day Is Unavoidable, Maximize the Interval
If scheduling forces both into the same day, allow at least 6 hours between sessions (e.g., strength in the morning, aerobic in the evening), giving muscle glycogen and the signaling environment partial recovery.
Principle 3: Do the Current Priority First
Place the most important goal of the current cycle when the body is freshest. Maximal strength phase → lift first; VO2max emphasis phase → do intervals first. The training placed second is downgraded to “maintenance” status.
Principle 4: Protect Quality Sessions on the Following Day
Within 24–48 hours after heavy lower-body lifting, avoid scheduling key high-intensity intervals or long-distance sessions, because the lower body is still recovering and both output and movement quality will suffer.

Note: Maximal strength (Mon) and high-intensity intervals (Thu) are 3 days apart, so they do not interfere; low intensity is scheduled the day after lower-body lifting to protect recovery.
“The interference effect is often over-dreaded. For amateur endurance athletes, the real problem is rarely molecular signaling conflicts, but simply being ‘too tired’—doing intervals the day after heavy lower-body lifting results in poor output, bad form, and increased injury risk. With smart scheduling, the two can coexist very well.”
Adjustments During the Competitive Season
During the season, endurance intensity and racing take priority, with strength reduced to one maintenance session per week. At this point, schedule the maintenance session at the time furthest from races and not on high-intensity interval days, minimizing both interference and fatigue risk.
The interference effect is not a ban on “training strength and endurance at the same time,” but a reminder to “arrange them intelligently.” Master the three levers of interval, order, and priority, and you can fully reap the dual dividends of being both strong and durable.
