Summer Grand Tour mountain stages are often contested in temperatures above 30°C. Heat stress raises core body temperature, increases cardiovascular load, and triggers central fatigue prematurely. Many attribute stage collapses to a lack of leg strength, but often it is thermoregulation that fails first. Heat acclimation training targets precisely this underestimated limiting factor.

Plasma Volume Expansion: The Fastest and Most Critical Step

The earliest change from heat acclimation is plasma volume expansion, often appearing within days. Increased plasma volume means a larger circulating volume, so the heart doesn’t have to work as hard at the same intensity, and heart rate drift (cardiac drift) is reduced. For mountain stages where you need to sustain threshold output in the heat, this is a direct endurance dividend.

The Seven-to-Ten-Day Golden Timeline

Full heat acclimation generally requires seven to ten days of repeated heat exposure. A common approach is daily controlled-intensity training in a hot environment (or with added clothing), deliberately raising core temperature to the target zone and holding it there for a period. If more than about two weeks pass without heat exposure, the adaptations gradually fade, so timing must be aligned with the target event.

Practical Implementation Points

  • Exposure must be ‘effective’: core temperature needs to be raised to the acclimation threshold and maintained
  • Intensity can be reduced: the goal is the heat stimulus, not training to exhaustion
  • Hydration and electrolytes: monitor body weight changes and sodium intake more closely during the acclimation period
  • Timing alignment: complete one to two weeks before the event to avoid premature decay
  • Combining with altitude: stacking heat and hypoxia requires careful scheduling to avoid double overload

Why Amateur Riders Should Pay Even More Attention

Professional riders have team-managed cooling strategies (ice vests, pre-cooling before the start), while amateur riders often have none of that, making them even more likely to blow up in hot endurance events. For long summer events, a pre-race heat acclimation block and active cooling strategies during the race offer far better value than buying another set of aero wheels.

In summer races, it is often not your legs that betray you first, but your thermoregulatory system. Heat acclimation is one of the few training interventions that delivers tangible returns within one to two weeks—it won’t raise your FTP, but it will let you actually use the FTP you have on a 35°C mountain road, instead of watching it fall apart.
