Downhill Is the Only “Free” Attack in Endurance Sports
Climbing costs watts, riding on the flats costs watts—but on descents alone, skilled riders can take dozens of seconds from their rivals with almost no extra pedaling. It is the most undervalued skill in the amateur scene and the most meticulously calculated “free time” in the pro peloton. Lombardia and multiple Grand Tour GC battles have been decided on the descents.
The Determinants of Descending Speed
| Factor | Physical Mechanism | Trainability |
|---|---|---|
| Cornering line | Outside-inside-outside to widen the corner radius | High |
| Braking point and braking technique | Complete deceleration before the corner, release through the apex | High |
| Center of gravity and body position | Lower the center of gravity, apply pressure with the outside foot | High |
| Tire grip circle | Grip is allocated between steering and braking simultaneously | Cognitive decision determines execution |
Line Choice: Stealing Time with Geometry
The fastest line through a corner is “outside-inside-outside”—enter wide, kiss the apex, and exit wide. This maximizes the actual turning radius, allowing a higher cornering speed with the same available grip. Amateur riders instinctively cut to the inside to “take the short way,” only to be forced to brake harder and exit slower. Line choice is pure geometry—it costs zero watts.
The Grip Circle: You Can’t Use It All Twice at Once
A tire’s total grip is a finite “circle” that must be divided between “steering” and “braking/accelerating.” If you are still braking hard mid-corner, you are giving all the grip to braking, leaving too little for steering—that is the physics behind low-siding. The correct approach is “finish braking before the corner, release the brakes through the apex,” which is also why the “braking point” matters more than “braking force.”
Principles for Downhill Training Under Safe Conditions
- Progress gradually on familiar, low-traffic roads; speed must be built on control
- Look far ahead toward the exit point rather than at the front wheel; the line follows your eyes
- Complete the main braking before the corner, and through the apex try not to brake—let the bike run
- Press down with the outside foot and lower your center of gravity to increase vertical tire load and grip
Why It Connects to the Entire Racing Logic
Time gained on descents, like pacing in time trials or drafting in TTTs, is “speed earned without extra physiological cost.” In an era where everyone’s power is public, these non-power skills have become the key differentiator—Roubaix’s cobble efficiency, the track’s fixed-gear ratio decisions, and descending lines all follow the same logic: victory is not decided by watts alone.
Downhill is the closest thing to “getting something for nothing” in endurance sports—but only if you truly understand its physics. Line choice is free geometry, braking points are free timing, and the grip circle is an unforgiving physical limit. Amateur riders treat descents as a rest; professional riders treat them as an attack with zero power cost. In an age when everyone’s power is visible, whether you dare—and know how—to let the bike run may decide your placing more than your FTP.
