The taper week is the most misunderstood phase in periodization. Many treat it as “pre-race relaxation and rest,” with the result that they either cut too much and lose fitness, or cut too little and show up carrying fatigue. Its essence is an optimization problem: finding the highest point of net performance between fatigue dissipation and fitness preservation.

Why Tapering Works: Two Different Decay Rates
The scientific basis of tapering is that fatigue and fitness decay at different rates. After stopping high load, fatigue dissipates quickly, while fitness is lost slowly. As long as you race within the window where this gap is maximized, net state reaches its peak. This also explains why “cut volume significantly, preserve intensity” is the mainstream approach—cutting volume unloads fatigue, while keeping intensity prevents fitness from dropping too fast.

Taper design revolves around three parameters: volume reduction (usually significant, a major cut), intensity preservation (key high-intensity stimuli maintained, only shortened), and duration (depending on accumulated fatigue and the target race). The most common failure is “cutting intensity instead of volume”—turning training into low-intensity long rides that neither unloads enough fatigue nor dulls fitness and the nervous system.
