The Most Important Decision, Data Can’t Help You With
The most decisive moment in a race is often “whether to follow this attack.” This decision happens within seconds—there’s no time to look down at the power meter, and no coach whispering W’ in your ear. It’s an ability that must be internalized, one that can’t be outsourced to instruments—and the amateur scene severely underestimates it.
The Inputs for Deciding Whether to Follow an Attack
| Judgment Dimension | Key Question | Direction of Influence |
|---|---|---|
| Attacker’s identity | Is he a GC threat or a harmless breakaway | The bigger the threat, the more you should follow |
| Remaining race distance | How far to the finish | Following too early risks blowing up |
| Perceived W’ status | How much battery is left (echoing the W’ model) | Let it go if you can’t afford to burn |
| Peloton’s willingness | Will those behind help you chase | If someone will chase, you can let it go |
| Terrain | Is it climbing or flat ahead | Determines whether the attack can succeed |
Why This Ability Is Scarce in the Data Era
Power meters and real-time data have trained riders to “decide by the numbers,” but the most critical moments of racing are precisely when there’s no room to look at numbers (echoing the no-radio theme of the World Championships). Riders who over-rely on data become paralyzed the moment information is absent. Those who know how to race are the ones who have internalized data-driven training into feel and can make the right call without numbers.
Profiling Your Opponent: Who You’re Following
The same attack launched by a GC rival versus a non-threatening rider makes a world of difference in whether you should follow. Top riders carry a constantly updated “opponent capability map” in their heads (echoing power curve shapes, the Remco/Lipowitz profiles)—they don’t react to the attack itself, but to who launched it.
How to Train Race Reading
- Race more: Race reading is built primarily through real competitive situations; it can’t be developed on a trainer alone
- Post-race review: Compare each “follow/don’t follow” decision against the outcome
- Internalize W’ feel: Train until you know how much battery is left without looking at the meter (echoing W’ and durability)
- Build the habit of profiling opponents: Record the capability shapes and tactical tendencies of riders you frequently face
It’s the Outlet for Every Data Topic
FTP, W’, power curves, durability, pacing—the ultimate purpose of all this data training isn’t a pretty file, but making the right decision in that one moment of the race. Race reading is the outlet for all of it: data builds the model in training, but in racing it must dissolve into instinct.
The most expensive ability in a race is the one the power meter can’t help with: in that 0.5 seconds when an attack goes, judging whether to burn the battery down. It can’t be learned by looking at numbers—only through one real battle after another, one post-race regret after another, slowly internalized. All power training ultimately has to answer the same question—when there are no numbers to look at, can you still get it right? That is the true end point of data.
