The Truth About Wearable Device Accuracy: How Much Can You Trust Heart Rate, Sleep, and Recovery Scores
Different Metrics, Different Credibility
Wearable devices present a slew of numbers, but their accuracy varies wildly. Blindly trusting “recovery score 38, rest today” can be just as bad as blindly training hard. The key is knowing how each number is derived, its margin of error, and whether to treat it as gospel or as a trend.

The Hard Limits of Optical Heart Rate
Wrist-based optical heart rate (PPG) relies on detecting blood flow pulses through the skin. Errors are significantly amplified during vigorous wrist movement (arm swing while running, interval pace changes, weightlifting, handlebar vibration while cycling), cold-induced vasoconstriction, darker skin tones, tattoos, and loose strap fit, commonly resulting in “locking onto a wrong value” or picking up cadence instead of heart rate. When you need accurate heart rate (intervals, threshold sessions, HRV baselines), a chest strap or upper-arm optical strap remains the gold/silver standard.
Sleep Stages and Recovery Scores: Estimates of Estimates
Consumer devices “infer” deep sleep/REM stages from movement and heart rate variability; compared to the polysomnography (PSG) gold standard, stage accuracy is limited—total sleep duration is relatively trustworthy, but don’t take the proportion of each stage seriously. The “recovery/readiness score” is a composite estimate derived by feeding HRV, resting heart rate, sleep, recent load, etc., into a manufacturer’s black-box algorithm. Algorithms differ between brands and aren’t comparable, and the score is a trend indicator, not a physiological fact.
Calorie Numbers Are the Least Trustworthy
Energy expenditure estimates often carry large errors (especially for resistance training and non-steady-state exercise). Using them to precisely calculate dietary deficits will be seriously distorted; weight management should rely primarily on weight trends and dietary records.
The Right Mindset
- Look at trends, not single-day absolute values: Individual longitudinal changes measured on the same device under the same conditions are the most meaningful.
- Standardize measurements: Take HRV/resting heart rate at a fixed time in the morning, in the same posture, on the same device.
- When data conflicts with your body, trust your body: If the score says you’re fully recovered but you feel exhausted, defer to how you feel.
- Upgrade your tools based on needs: If you need accurate heart rate/HRV, use a chest strap; don’t force wrist-based devices through high-intensity sessions.
The most dangerous thing about wearables isn’t inaccuracy—it’s packaging “estimates” as “precise scores” for you to swallow wholesale. Remember which ones you can trust (resting heart rate trends) and which ones you shouldn’t take seriously (sleep stages, recovery scores, calories), and it becomes an assistant rather than a coach that deceives you.
