Performance Has a Daily Rhythm
Nearly all physiological functions in the human body are regulated by an approximately 24-hour circadian rhythm, and athletic performance is no exception. A large body of research shows that strength, power, anaerobic output, and most endurance metrics tend to reach their daily peak in the afternoon to early evening (roughly coinciding with the core body temperature peak, commonly 16:00–20:00), while morning performance is relatively lower. The differences are not huge, but at the competitive level they can be enough to decide success or failure.
Mechanism: Core Body Temperature Is the Master Rhythm
The performance rhythm is highly synchronized with the core body temperature rhythm. When core temperature is higher in the evening: muscle viscosity decreases, nerve conduction and contraction speed improve, enzyme activity is higher, and joint mobility is better—essentially “the body comes pre-warmed.” In the morning, core temperature is low, muscles are stiffer, neuromuscular efficiency is lower, and this is often accompanied by sleep inertia.

Individual Differences: Chronotype
“Morning types (larks)” and “evening types (owls)” have performance peaks that shift earlier or later according to their circadian phase. Evening types show a greater morning performance disadvantage and a larger evening advantage; morning types show a smaller gap. If a race is scheduled in the early morning (as with most marathons and triathlons), evening-type athletes are at a relative disadvantage—but this is a disadvantage that can be addressed.
Shifting Your Peak to Race Time
Key practical point: the rhythm can be partially reshaped by “training time” and “light exposure.”
- Race-time-specific training: In the weeks before a race, train consistently at the time of day the race will be held (especially for morning races). This can shift your performance rhythm and physiological readiness toward that time slot, narrowing the morning disadvantage.
- Light exposure and sleep schedule: Regular light exposure and a fixed wake-up time stabilize and can fine-tune circadian phase; for races across time zones, adjust gradually several days in advance (roughly 1 hour per day).
- Extended warm-up is especially effective in the morning: For morning races, a more thorough and longer warm-up can partially compensate for the disadvantage of low core temperature—in a sense, “artificially raising” local muscle temperature.
Implications for Training Planning
- If you want to test a PB, do the highest-quality intervals, or perform strength testing: the evening time slot usually yields the best numbers. Don’t test yourself right after waking up, bleary-eyed, and then get discouraged.
- But if your race is in the morning, be sure to include morning training sessions for time-of-day adaptation; otherwise, race day will be the first time you compete at a physiological low point.
- For races across time zones, treat jet lag adjustment as a formal part of your preparation, not something to figure out on arrival.
Watch Out for Confounding Factors
Meal timing, caffeine, fatigue from prior training, and sleep debt all stack on top of the rhythm. The rhythm is an “underlying tendency,” not fate—a well-prepared morning performance can still beat an unprepared evening one.
Your body has a “golden window” every day, and for most people it falls in the evening. But races won’t accommodate your physiological peak—so the smart move is to use same-time training, light exposure, and a longer warm-up in the weeks before the race to move that peak to the moment the starting gun fires.
