Youth Endurance Training: Growth Plates, Training Volume Limits, and the "Early Maturation Trap"
Adolescents Are Not Miniature Adults
Scaling down an adult training plan proportionally and applying it to adolescents is a common and harmful mistake. The developing body differs fundamentally from an adult’s in terms of bones (growth plates), hormones, thermoregulation, and psychological maturity. The core goal of Long-Term Athlete Development should be health, broad movement competence, and staying in sport long-term, not short-term results during adolescence. - High-intensity intervals: Adolescents respond well to aerobic training, and moderate, monitored intervals are feasible, but they should be framed within play-based, skill-oriented, and holistic development rather than adult-style high-volume, high-pressure intervals.
- Strength training: Under qualified supervision, with technique as the priority and progressive loading, resistance training for adolescents is safe and beneficial (improving strength, movement quality, and reducing injury rates)—“lifting weights will damage growth plates” is an outdated myth; the real risk is unsupervised poor technique and reckless loading.
- Avoid early specialization: Specializing in only one sport too early is associated with overuse injuries, burnout, and a lower long-term ceiling; multi-sport experience is more beneficial for long-term development.
The Early-Maturation Trap and the Relative Age Effect
A key long-term development issue: Performance during adolescence is heavily influenced by the timing of biological maturation and relative age, not by true long-term potential.
- Short-term advantage of early maturers: Those who develop earlier within the same age group (taller, stronger, earlier hormonal changes) often win in youth competitions and tend to receive selection bias and resource allocation, but this often reflects a “maturity difference” rather than a “talent difference.”
- Relative Age Effect (RAE): Within the same age group, those born earlier in the year (relatively older, slightly ahead in development) are overrepresented; late-born or late-maturing individuals with high potential are easily underestimated, filtered out, and lost.
- Late maturers get buried instead: Many late maturers have higher long-term potential but lose opportunities and confidence due to temporarily lagging behind during adolescence (connected to articles on post-injury psychology and motivation).
Implication: Youth selection and training decisions should adjust for maturity (biological age rather than just chronological age), value long-term trajectories over current rankings, and protect late maturers from being eliminated prematurely. Parents/coaches who place excessive weight on adolescent wins and losses often create burnout and eliminate true long-term talent.
Health Red Flags
The combination of the growth period + high training volume + insufficient energy is a high-risk combination for bones and development; delayed/irregular menarche, recurrent stress fractures, growth stunting, excessive fatigue, and emotional issues should be evaluated by medical professionals (see the RED-S article)—these are never “the price of hard work.”
The goal of adolescent training is not the medals of this season; it’s whether ten years from now they’re still on the track and whether their body has been broken by training. Don’t be fooled by the temporary lead of early maturers—many champions are just early bloomers, and many eliminated late maturers are the real buried talent.
