Female Training Should Not Copy the Male Template
Female triathletes differ systematically from males in hormonal fluctuations, energy requirements, and injury patterns. Ignoring these differences can lead to performance plateaus at best, and RED-S (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport) at worst.
Menstrual Cycle and Training Approach (General Reference)
| Phase | Hormonal Characteristics | Training Tendency |
|---|---|---|
| Follicular phase | Rising estrogen | Better tolerance for high intensity and strength work |
| Around ovulation | Estrogen peak | Watch for joint laxity, prevent sprains |
| Luteal phase | High progesterone | Elevated body temperature, poor heat tolerance; adjust training in hot environments |
Individual variation is enormous; base decisions on your own menstrual and performance records rather than applying a formula.
RED-S: The Biggest Hidden Threat for Female Triathletes
Chronic insufficient energy intake can lead to menstrual disruption, decreased bone density, and performance collapse. Red flags: loss of menstruation, recurrent stress fractures, and getting more tired with more training while seeing no progress. The core remedy is “eating enough,” not “training more.”
Iron and Bone Health
Female triathletes have a high prevalence of iron deficiency, which affects oxygen transport and performance. Regular ferritin testing is recommended; impact training (running, strength work) is equally important for maintaining bone density.
Gear and Comfort
Women’s-cut wetsuits, tri-suit pads, and sports bra support all affect long-distance performance and willingness to train—don’t settle for men’s or unisex versions.
Calculate “Energy Availability” Instead of Guessing
Energy Availability (EA) = (Energy intake − Exercise energy expenditure) ÷ Fat-free mass. Research shows that an EA below 30 kcal/kg FFM/day is a high-risk zone for RED-S, with an ideal target of 45 or above. Example: a female athlete weighing 50 kg with 20% body fat (FFM 40 kg) burns 600 kcal in a day’s training; if she eats only 1800 kcal all day, EA = (1800−600)/40 = 30—right on the red line. This is precisely the most common numerical trap behind “training a lot yet losing your period and getting stress fractures.”
Trackable Indicators for Iron and Bone Health
| Indicator | Recommended Monitoring Frequency | Warning Values |
|---|---|---|
| Serum ferritin | Every 3–6 months | < 30 ng/mL affects performance |
| Menstrual regularity | Continuous tracking | Missing ≥3 consecutive months |
| Bone density DXA | Every 1–2 years for high-risk athletes | Z-score < −1 requires intervention |
Common Mistake: Responding to Plateaus with “Train More”
When female athletes hit a performance plateau, the instinctive reaction is often to add volume—but if the root cause is insufficient EA, adding volume only widens the deficit and accelerates the decline. The correct sequence is to first restore calorie and carbohydrate intake (especially 1.0 g/kg of carbs within 1 hour after training), bring menstruation and ferritin back to normal, and only then consider adding volume. For RED-S, eating enough is part of the training, not a compromise.
The most common thing I correct with female athletes is “eating too little while wanting to train more.” A woman’s body will protest an energy deficit with missed periods and stress fractures. Train smart, eat enough, and adjust according to your own cycle—this matters more than any training plan.
