Kinmen Battlefield Cycling Circuit: A 50km Tour of Tunnels, Artillery Positions, and Minnan Settlements

Riding on the Frontline of History

Kinmen lies just about 2km from Xiamen, and a full loop around Greater Kinmen covers roughly 50km with gentle terrain, making it one of the least physically demanding island circumnavigation rides. Its value lies not in elevation gain, but in the fact that every stretch of road is steeped in wartime history—tunnels, anti-landing obstacles, propaganda walls, and Minnan settlements interwoven along the way.

Route Highlights

Section Distance Theme Highlights
Jincheng → Zhaishan 8 km Wartime fortifications Zhaishan Tunnel, underwater artificial tunnel
Zhaishan → Guningtou 12 km Battle of Guningtou Beishan Propaganda Wall, War History Museum
Shanhou → Mashan 15 km The frontline standoff Shanhou Folk Culture Village, Mashan Observation Station
Jinhu → Jincheng 15 km Settlements and culture Juguang Tower, Mofan Street

Zhaishan Tunnel

Zhaishan Tunnel is a man-made waterway carved into granite, once used for landing craft to deliver supplies. When you ride here, you can park your bike and enter the tunnel for a visit, experiencing the sheer scale of engineering from the Cold War era.

A One-Day Wartime History Timeline

Stringing the 50km together as a “timeline” ride carries more weight than simply looping around. A clockwise historical narrative route is recommended:

Time Stop Era Suggested Stay
09:00 Guningtou War History Museum 1949 Battle of Guningtou About 40 minutes; first grasp the island’s overall context
10:30 Beishan Propaganda Wall Cross-strait psychological warfare era About 20 minutes; listen to the history of Teresa Teng’s broadcasts
12:00 Shanhou Folk Culture Village Late-Qing Minnan overseas Chinese hometown Lunch + village stroll, about 1 hour
14:00 Mashan Observation Station The very frontline of the standoff Use telescopes to look across the strait, about 30 minutes
15:30 Zhaishan Tunnel Cold War supply engineering Enter the tunnel for a visit, about 40 minutes

Following this timeline, you will clearly feel how Kinmen progressed from battle, to psychological warfare, to standoff, and finally to openness—a depth that no other outlying island can offer.

Riding Experience

Kinmen is densely forested and known as the “Park on the Sea.” In summer, the tree shade offers sun protection and makes riding relatively comfortable. The wind is milder than in Penghu, though the northeast monsoon still blows in winter. Village roads are narrow, so slow down when encountering pedestrians and tour buses.

Supplies and Bike Rental

Jincheng and Shanwai are the two main supply hubs, with convenience stores and local eateries in abundance. Several bike rental shops on the island offer circumnavigation maps and electric-assist bike options, suitable for travelers who don’t bring their own bikes.

Itinerary Suggestions

With 50km plus stops at each attraction, it’s recommended to set aside a full day for a leisurely ride, using Cantonese-style congee and Kinmen noodles as fuel—far more worthwhile than chasing mileage.

Kinmen’s roads are flat, but the emotions they stir are not. As you ride past one point after another that was once on high alert, you’ll be grateful to rediscover this island in the most peaceful way possible—on a bicycle.
