Taipei Dajia to Guandu Marathon Training Route: A 32km Long-Run Course for Urban Runners

A City Runner’s 32K Home Turf

The hardest part of marathon training isn’t speed—it’s the “uninterrupted long run.” The out-and-back route from Dajia Riverside Park to Guandu along the Taipei riverside is roughly 32 km, completely flat, and nearly free of traffic lights. It’s the most practical venue for city runners to execute marathon long runs (30K+).

Route Breakdown

Segment Distance Characteristics Aid Points
Dajia → Shezi Island Approx. 8 km Flat riverside Drinking water at Dajia Service Station
Shezi Island → Guandu Approx. 8 km River-sea junction, windy Around Guandu Nature Park
Guandu → Return to Dajia Approx. 16 km Same route back Same as above

Why It Suits Long Runs

The “wall” in the later stages of a marathon (after 30K) needs to be rehearsed through long runs. The Dajia-to-Guandu stretch has no traffic signals and allows continuous running, making it ideal for practicing “maintaining pace under fatigue”—a mental challenge that track loops simply cannot simulate.

The 32K Workout’s Segment-by-Segment Fueling Clock

Half the value of a long run lies in “training the legs,” and the other half in “rehearsing the race-day fueling schedule.” It’s recommended to design your fueling exactly like a race, on a fixed clock:

Mileage Fueling Action Simulated Race Scenario
Before departure Drink 150–250 ml sports drink Final fueling before the start line
8 km (return to Dajia bag drop) One energy gel + a few sips of water First aid station of the race
16 km Second energy gel + electrolytes Halfway fueling
24 km Third energy gel Preventive carb loading before the wall
After 30 km Hydrate as needed, ease off the pace Final management before the finish

Key point: leave a drop bag at the Dajia starting point and refuel each time you loop back every 8 km, forcing yourself to practice “fueling on the move without stopping your watch.” Trying this for the first time on race day is a gamble—these 32 km are exactly how you train both your gut and your rhythm to work together.

Timing and Risks

Between 6 and 8 a.m., foot traffic is lightest, so you can execute the workout safely at full effort. The river-sea junction between Shezi Island and Guandu often has headwinds; you can deliberately use the tailwind on the return leg to practice “accelerating while fatigued.” After typhoons, sections may be closed—check the announcements.

Pacing Recommendations

For the first 24 km of the 32K workout, run at marathon pace + 20 seconds; for the final 8 km, ease down to your target pace to simulate a negative split.

The marathon isn’t decided on race day—it’s decided on these unseen 32 kilometers. The riverside won’t give you applause, but it will give you an honest answer: whether you’ve trained enough or not.
